Berlin, Germany: India’s Commerce and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that India will not rush into any trade agreements, including ongoing negotiations with the United States. Speaking at the Berlin Global Dialogue, Goyal highlighted that New Delhi seeks long-term partnerships based on trust, not external pressure.
India is also engaging with the European Union for a free trade agreement, focusing on market access, environmental standards, and rules of origin. Goyal clarified that trade decisions will prioritize national interest, regardless of external opinions or pressures.
Concerns over India’s continued imports of Russian oil have been raised internationally. Goyal stressed that energy security and affordable consumer prices are critical, emphasizing India’s sovereign decision-making. “Do not think India has ever decided who its friends will be based on considerations other than national interest,” he said.
Experts note that reducing reliance on Russian crude is possible but may increase costs due to pricier alternatives from the Middle East. While former US President Donald Trump claimed Modi agreed to curb Russian oil imports during trade talks, India has not confirmed this.
The minister’s remarks underscore India’s cautious, calculated approach to trade, balancing global relations with domestic priorities. India continues to explore new markets and partnerships to strengthen its trade footprint while safeguarding long-term growth and energy security.
