Advanced Design and Capabilities
The ASW SWC series, constructed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between GRSE and L&T Shipyard, Kattupalli, follows the Classification Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). At approximately 77 meters in length, these are the largest Indian naval warships propelled by waterjets.
‘Anjadip’ is equipped with state-of-the-art lightweight torpedoes, indigenously designed anti-submarine rockets, and shallow water sonar systems, enabling effective detection and engagement of underwater threats. The vessel strengthens India’s anti-submarine capabilities, coastal surveillance, and mine-laying operations.
Legacy and Strategic Importance
The new ship carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Anjadip, a Petya-class corvette decommissioned in 2003. Named after Anjadip Island off the coast of Karwar, Karnataka, it underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime domain.
With over 80% indigenous content, the vessel reflects the Government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ and demonstrates the growing capabilities of India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, reducing reliance on imports.
Indigenous Shipbuilding and Defence Manufacturing
The delivery of ‘Anjadip’ is a testament to the success of collaborative defence manufacturing in India. By combining expertise from GRSE and L&T Shipyard, the project showcases the potential of indigenously built warships to meet modern naval challenges while supporting local industry.
This achievement reinforces India’s maritime strength, ensuring robust coastal defence and enhancing the operational readiness of the Indian Navy in shallow waters.
