Indian-Origin Man in Critical Condition After Violent Arrest by Australian Police

RR Team, June 3, 2025June 3, 2025

Adelaide, Australia – June 3, 2025:

An Indian origin man, Gaurav Kundi, is in critical condition after a violent arrest by police in Adelaide, South Australia. The shocking incident, which was partly recorded on video by his wife, has sparked outrage and raised concerns over police conduct, echoing past global controversies around the use of force.

Indian Origin Man Incident Details

The incident occurred when South Australian police responded to what they believed was a domestic dispute involving Kundi and his wife, Amritpal Kaur. According to police, Kundi appeared intoxicated and was arguing loudly, prompting neighbours to call the authorities. Officers said they suspected domestic violence, though his wife later clarified it was a verbal disagreement and not physical.

Upon arrival, officers attempted to detain Kundi. Multiple witnesses and recordings show the situation quickly escalated. As Kundi tried to explain he had “done nothing wrong,” one officer reportedly pinned him to the ground, placing a knee on his neck while another allegedly smashed his head against the pavement. He lost consciousness during the arrest.

His wife, visibly distressed, captured parts of the assault on her phone and begged police to stop. “They banged his head on the car and then on the road,” she told local media. “When I saw the knee on his neck, I stopped recording—I was too scared.”

Medical Condition

Kundi was rushed to a local hospital where doctors diagnosed him with serious head trauma and potential brain and nerve injuries. As of the latest reports, he remains in critical condition.

Police Response

The South Australia Police Department defended the officers’ actions, stating they followed standard procedure. Acting Assistant Commissioner John DeCandia said that initial bodycam footage showed officers acting “within the scope of training,” but admitted the investigation is still ongoing. “That’s only one piece of the evidence,” he added.

Public Reaction and Comparisons

The case has drawn comparisons to the 2020 death of George Floyd in the United States, where excessive police force led to a global movement against racial profiling and police brutality. Critics argue that the Adelaide case reflects a continuing global issue around disproportionate use of force, especially against ethnic minorities.

Human rights groups in both India and Australia have called for a transparent investigation. The Indian High Commission in Canberra has reportedly sought an explanation from the Australian government and is closely monitoring the situation.

Wife Speaks Out

Amritpal Kaur has been vocal about the trauma her family is experiencing. “My husband was not violent. Yes, he had been drinking, but he wasn’t hurting anyone,” she said. “Now he’s in a hospital bed fighting for his life, and we don’t know what justice will look like.”

She also expressed frustration that despite her attempts to de-escalate the situation, the police did not back down. “They didn’t even listen to me. I kept telling them it wasn’t what they thought.”

Ongoing Investigation

As per South Australian law, cases involving serious injuries in police custody are automatically reviewed by an independent police oversight body. Investigators are now gathering more footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together a timeline of the arrest.

Legal experts suggest that if found guilty of excessive force, the officers involved could face disciplinary action or criminal charges.
