With this rollout, Kavach 4.0 now covers over 1,300 route kilometres across five railway zones, significantly enhancing train safety, operational reliability, and passenger confidence. Previously, the system was commissioned on 834 km, including the Palwal–Mathura–Nagda corridor and Howrah–Bardhaman section.
The new commissioning also marks the largest route kilometre deployment in a single month, surpassing the previous record of 324 km on the Kota–Mathura section.
Upgrades on Northern Railway
The 35-km Tuglakabad Junction Cabin–Palwal section, part of the four-line Delhi–Mumbai route, now operates under Kavach 4.0. This high-density corridor serves suburban and long-distance passenger trains, and freight traffic, providing enhanced safety against collisions and overspeeding.
East Central Railway Implementation
On the 93.3-km Manpur–Sarmatanr section, Train No. 13305 Sasaram Intercity Express successfully ran with Kavach 4.0. A head-on collision test was conducted during the journey, confirming the system’s automatic braking and operational effectiveness. Kavach installation on East Central Railway spans 4,235 route kilometres, supporting the Delhi–Howrah corridor’s safety and speed potential upgrade under Mission Raftar.
Western Railway Milestone
The Vadodara–Virar section, part of the Delhi–Mumbai route, witnessed the first Kavach-equipped train, Dadar–Bhuj Sayajinagri Express, marking a historic achievement. Ongoing work on Vadodara–Nagda and Virar–Mumbai Central sections is slated for completion by September 2026, with 364 locomotives already Kavach-enabled.
About Kavach 4.0
Kavach 4.0 integrates microprocessors, GPS, and radio communication technologies to prevent collisions, control overspeeding, and provide automatic alerts during wrong-direction or reverse movements. Certified to global SIL-4 safety standards, the system reduces dependence on imported technologies and is cost-effective for large-scale deployment across India’s rail network.
The system ensures automatic protection against Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), side, head-on, and rear-end collisions, while generating real-time alerts for level crossings and operational hazards.
Future Roadmap
Indian Railways plans to progressively expand Kavach 4.0 coverage across more high-density corridors, reinforcing the government’s commitment to safe, reliable, and modern rail travel. This rollout exemplifies India’s self-reliant technological capability in rail safety systems.
