India’s Coal Production from Captive and Commercial Mines Crosses 100 Million Tonnes

RR Team, November 10, 2024November 10, 2024

India has achieved a significant milestone in its coal production, with output from captive and commercial mines surpassing 100 million tonnes (MT) as of November 8, 2024. This marks a major step toward realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit (developed) and Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) Bharat, with the country reaching this achievement nearly 100 days ahead of the same period in the previous year.

According to the Ministry of Coal, the production from captive and commercial coal mines for the period between April 1, 2024, and November 8, 2024, stands at 100.08 MT, compared to 75.05 MT during the same period in FY 2023-24, reflecting a robust year-on-year growth of 33%. Similarly, coal dispatches from these mines during this period have also risen, reaching 107.81 MT, up from 80.23 MT in the previous year—a growth rate of 34%.

The increasing contribution of captive and commercial mines to India’s overall coal production highlights the success of sector reforms and growing private sector involvement. This shift has been key to bolstering the nation’s energy security and advancing its goal of achieving self-sufficiency in critical energy resources.

The Ministry of Coal has set an ambitious target to produce over 170 million tonnes of coal from captive and commercial mines in the 2024-25 financial year, indicating a continued upward trajectory for the sector.

This achievement not only underscores India’s expanding capabilities in the coal sector but also contributes significantly to the country’s economic growth. The growing share of private coal production further strengthens India’s energy independence, helping meet domestic energy demands and supporting industrial growth.

The government remains committed to ensuring the growth of the coal sector, while maintaining a strong focus on sustainable and environmentally responsible mining practices. As India moves towards its Viksit Bharat goals by 2047, this milestone is a testament to the successful reforms and the vital role of the coal sector in driving the nation’s energy and economic future.
