India’s Eco-Tourism Drive: Travel for LiFE & Green Routes

RR Team, July 29, 2025July 31, 2025

India is embracing sustainability at the heart of its tourism vision. From lush forests to pristine lakes, the country is now encouraging travellers to explore responsibly. The Ministry of Tourism is leading this green shift by promoting eco-tourism and sustainable travel across states and union territories.

National Strategies for Eco and Sustainable Tourism

Recognising the urgent need to balance development with nature, the Ministry has formulated National Strategies for Ecotourism and Sustainable Tourism. These policies guide tourism infrastructure, business models, and tourist behaviour towards eco-conscious choices.

Launched under India’s G20 Presidency, the Travel for LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) programme encourages tourists and industry players alike to adopt greener habits. Whether it’s zero-plastic stays, carbon-neutral transport, or community-based tourism, the message is clear — sustainability is the new luxury.

Swadesh Darshan & Eco Circuits

As part of the revamped Swadesh Darshan Scheme, the government has introduced the Eco Circuit as a thematic tourism route. This circuit is designed to attract nature-loving travellers while also generating livelihoods for local communities.

States like Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Sikkim have taken active steps to develop eco-tourism spots under this initiative. From backwater kayaking to wildlife safaris, eco-experiences now dot the Indian tourism map.

Financial Support for Green Tourism Infrastructure

The Ministry of Tourism offers financial assistance to States, UTs, and Central Agencies for developing eco-friendly tourism infrastructure. This includes pathways, signage, sanitation, solar lighting, and nature interpretation centres.

These facilities not only improve visitor experience but also protect local ecology and heritage. It’s an investment in both nature and the economy.

Deployment of Tourist Police for Safety

Safety and responsible travel go hand in hand. With this in mind, tourist police units have been deployed in several states including Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Jammu & Kashmir.

These personnel ensure a secure and respectful environment for all, especially in eco-sensitive and high-footfall zones.

Green Tourism = Smart Tourism

Eco-tourism is no longer a niche. It’s a national mission. Tourists today seek authenticity, serenity, and impact. India is ready to meet these expectations with nature-based experiences that are environmentally responsible and culturally enriching.

By aligning with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), India’s tourism sector is setting new benchmarks in conservation, community engagement, and innovation.

Government Commitment, Citizen Participation

Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, reaffirmed the government’s commitment in a recent Lok Sabha statement. He emphasized that sustainable tourism is not just a policy — it is a people’s movement.

With trusted government initiatives like Travel for LiFE and Eco Circuits, India is charting a greener path forward, inviting travellers to become partners in preservation.

Conclusion

From snow-covered mountains to tropical beaches, India’s ecological diversity is unparalleled. Through smart policies and responsible practices, the country is ensuring that this natural wealth is not only enjoyed — but also protected for future generations.

Travel green. Travel for LiFE. Travel Incredible India.
