India’s Electronics Industry Poised for Global Leadership: Shri Piyush Goyal’s Call to Action

RR Team, February 24, 2025February 24, 2025

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, has called for a stronger, more resilient electronics supply chain that ensures high-quality products at globally competitive prices. Speaking at the 16th edition of ‘ELECRAMA,’ organized by the Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturer’s Association (IEEMA) in New Delhi, the Minister emphasized the need for industry leaders to work collaboratively in advancing India’s position in the global electronics market.

Addressing a gathering of key stakeholders, Shri Goyal urged the industry to move away from protectionist policies and instead prioritize consumer interests. He highlighted that while supporting domestic businesses, especially MSMEs, is essential, excessive protectionism can ultimately harm consumers by limiting choices and keeping prices high. Striking the right balance, he insisted, is crucial for long-term growth.

The Minister took a moment to reflect on India’s incredible progress in electronic goods exports. Once ranked as the 167th export sector in 2015, it now holds the second spot in the country’s export rankings. In January 2025 alone, electronic goods exports reached an impressive USD 3 billion. With this momentum, Shri Goyal set forth an ambitious yet achievable target: making India a global hub for electrical goods exports, aspiring to hit USD 100 billion in international trade over the next seven years.

He also underscored the rapid transformation in India’s electronics industry over the past decade, noting a significant expansion in transmission infrastructure, renewable energy capacity, and overall installed power capacity. The government has played an instrumental role in this progress, facilitating the establishment of 1,800 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in India. Shri Goyal stressed that developing a future-ready workforce and fostering innovation, particularly by tapping into the country’s vast pool of STEM graduates, will be critical in sustaining this upward trajectory.

Speaking on the theme ‘Bharat – The Vishwa Mitra’ (India – The Global Partner), the Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering equitable and balanced international trade relationships. India, he said, aspires to be a trusted partner to nations worldwide, offering high-quality, affordable goods and services. This approach, rooted in fairness and collaboration, strengthens India’s standing as a nation ready to compete on the world stage.

Shri Goyal also praised key government initiatives such as ‘Digital India,’ ‘Make in India,’ ‘Design in India,’ and ‘Serve from India.’ These policies, he noted, are transforming the country’s economic landscape by encouraging local manufacturing while also positioning Indian businesses for success in global markets. He reassured industry leaders that the government remains committed to policy stability, skill development, and rapid economic growth.

His speech carried a sense of optimism and purpose, urging India’s electronics industry to rise to the challenge, embrace innovation, and play a key role in shaping the country’s economic future. As India continues its journey towards becoming a global powerhouse in electronics manufacturing and exports, the Minister’s words serve as a strong call to action for businesses to step up, collaborate, and deliver world-class products to the international market.
