India’s Plans for Small Nuclear Reactors and Research Development

In a recent announcement, India outlined its strategy to deploy Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs) and develop Bharat Small Modular Reactors (BSMRs). These reactors are intended primarily for sectors with specific captive power needs. Research and development efforts have already been initiated for the BSMRs, which are still in the exploration phase.

The Indian government has also introduced initiatives to involve the private sector in the country’s nuclear energy program. The supply chain for Bharat Small Reactors (220 MWe PHWRs) has already been established, with several reactors currently in operation. These reactors are recognized globally for their strong safety features and operational reliability. Moreover, BSRs are now considered some of the most cost-effective Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in the world.

Alongside these efforts, R&D for the development of new nuclear energy technologies, including the Bharat Small Modular Reactors, is actively progressing.
