Publications Released by MoSPI
These documents provide a comprehensive review of India’s performance against the National Indicator Framework (NIF), a tool developed with inputs from various ministries, UN agencies, and stakeholders. The three publications released are:

Key Highlights of the 2025 SDG Progress Report
The Progress Report, the most comprehensive of the three, includes:
- An overview and executive summary of the SDG-NIF.
- A data snapshot presenting key indicators across sectors.
- Metadata detailing each indicator, source, periodicity, and disaggregation levels.
- Time series data tables for long-term progress tracking.
India’s Performance Across Key Indicators
The 2025 update highlights India’s strong strides in areas like social protection, renewable energy, entrepreneurship, and income equality. Below are some notable improvements:
- Social protection coverage rose from 22% in 2016 to 64.3% in 2025.
- Agricultural productivity per worker increased from ₹61,247 (2015-16) to ₹94,110 (2024-25).
- Safe drinking water access in rural areas grew to 99.62%.
- Renewable energy share in power generation increased to 22.13% in 2024-25.
- Per capita renewable energy capacity rose to 156.31 watts (from 64.04 in 2014-15).
- Waste recycling plants grew from 829 (2019-20) to 3,036 (2024-25).
- Recognised startups expanded from 453 in 2016 to 34,293 in 2024.
- Income inequality reduced (Gini coefficient: rural down to 0.237, urban to 0.284).
- Emissions intensity of GDP reduced by 36% over 2005 levels.
- Internet subscriptions surged to 954.40 million (from 302.36 million in 2015).
- Waste processing improved to 80.7% from 17.97% (2015-16).
- Forest cover increased to 21.76% of geographical area.
Why This Matters
The NIF helps track India’s progress toward global sustainability targets while aligning them with national priorities. With 284 indicators tracked, it offers actionable insights for policymakers, researchers, and development agencies.
