IndiaSkills 2025–26 North-East Competition Inaugurated

The IndiaSkills Regional Competition 2025–26 for the North-East was inaugurated today at Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam, by Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Youth from eight North-Eastern states will compete across 26 skill categories, showcasing the region’s growing talent and potential to contribute to India’s skilled workforce.

Bringing National Platforms Closer to Home

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) as its implementation partner, has brought India’s premier skilling championship to the North-East for the first time. The regional competition allows young talent from the area to participate in national-level skills competitions without traveling far from home, strengthening the local skilling ecosystem.

The event saw the participation of key stakeholders including Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University; Shri Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, Principal Secretary to the Assam Government; and Ms. Hena Usman, Joint Secretary, MSDE, along with officials from various departments supporting skill development and entrepreneurship.

Minister Highlights Regional Talent

Addressing participants, Shri Jayant Chaudhary emphasized the Prime Minister’s sustained focus on the North-East, noting that national platforms like IndiaSkills complement this vision. “IndiaSkills is not merely a competition; it is a celebration of excellence, discipline, and the dignity of work,” he said. “The North-East has immense talent, and youth from this region are ready to lead India’s skilled workforce and contribute meaningfully to national growth.”

He also highlighted the importance of integrating skilling with formal education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which enhances employability, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning opportunities, making youth future-ready for a rapidly evolving economy.

Diverse Skill Categories and Regional Participation

The North-East Regional Competition features 162 competitors across eight states, participating in both traditional and contemporary skill areas such as Automobile Technology, Cloud Computing, Mobile App Development, Electronics, CNC Milling, Welding, Electrical Installations, Fashion Technology, Bakery & Patisserie, Hotel Reception, Health & Social Care, and Retail Sales.

The event highlights increasing participation of women in technical trades and the convergence of digital and manufacturing skills, aligning the North-East workforce with Industry 4.0 needs. Hospitality, healthcare, and retail skills reflect alignment with key regional growth sectors, especially tourism and services.

Pathway to National and Global Platforms

IndiaSkills competitions follow a structured evaluation process starting from district, state, and regional levels. Top performers from the North-East Regional Competition will advance to the IndiaSkills National Competition and may qualify to represent India at the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai from September 22-27, 2026. This platform bridges regional talent with national and global skill benchmarks, strengthening India’s competitive edge in workforce development.
