IndiGo Cancels 67 Flights Amid Fog, DGCA Probe Intensifies

RR Team, December 25, 2025December 25, 2025
New Delhi: IndiGo, India’s largest airline, canceled 67 flights on Thursday, citing bad weather and operational challenges. According to the airline, 63 cancellations were due to dense fog and poor visibility across several airports, while four were linked to internal operational reasons. The disruptions affected passengers in Agartala, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Varanasi, and Bengaluru.
The cancellations come at a time when IndiGo is already under close monitoring by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Earlier this month, the airline faced massive disruptions after canceling nearly 1,600 flights in a single day due to new pilot rest regulations. As a result, the government reduced IndiGo’s approved winter schedule by 10%, cutting its daily domestic flights from 2,144 to 1,930.

Winter Fog Season Adds Pressure

The DGCA has declared the winter fog season from December 10 to February 10, a period when airlines must adhere to stricter safety protocols. Aircraft operating during this season are required to be equipped with CAT-IIIB technology, which allows safe landings even when visibility drops to 50 meters. Airlines must also deploy specially trained pilots to handle low-visibility conditions.

IndiGo confirmed delays and cancellations in Bengaluru due to fog, adding to passenger frustration during the holiday season. The airline’s CEO Pieter Elbers recently assured that “the worst is behind us,” emphasizing that operations are stabilizing after weeks of turbulence.

DGCA Investigation Underway

A four-member DGCA panel is currently investigating IndiGo’s operational lapses. The team has already questioned CEO Pieter Elbers and COO Isidre Porqueras regarding the airline’s preparedness and staffing issues. The final report is expected soon, which may determine whether further regulatory action is necessary.

IndiGo’s troubles began in early December when thousands of flights were canceled between December 1–9. The disruptions were linked to poor planning and staff shortages as the airline struggled to implement new pilot rest rules introduced on November 1. These rules were designed to improve safety and reduce fatigue among crew members but required significant adjustments in scheduling.

Impact on Passengers and Industry

The cancellations have left thousands of passengers stranded or forced to reschedule their travel plans. Travel experts note that such large-scale disruptions not only affect passenger confidence but also impact India’s aviation sector, which is already grappling with infrastructure challenges during peak travel seasons.

Industry observers believe that IndiGo’s situation highlights the need for better coordination between airlines and regulators. The DGCA’s stricter oversight is seen as a necessary step to ensure passenger safety and operational reliability. For passengers, the advice remains to check flight status regularly during the fog season and plan for potential delays.

Government and Regulatory Response

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has reiterated its commitment to passenger safety, emphasizing that airlines must comply with all DGCA directives. Officials have also urged carriers to improve communication with passengers during disruptions.

As the holiday season continues, IndiGo’s ability to manage its reduced schedule will be closely watched. The airline’s performance during the fog season could determine whether it regains regulatory confidence or faces further restrictions.
