Focus on Blue Economy and Regional Cooperation
One of the key sessions centered on the Blue Economy as an instrument of foreign policy. Experts from Israel, Vietnam, and the Philippines shared perspectives on protecting underwater infrastructure and maritime connectivity. The discussions underscored India’s role as a facilitator in the region, emphasizing projects like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and enhanced ASEAN-India cooperation.
The National Maritime Foundation (NMF) also released a new publication titled “Maritime Perspectives: The Blue Economy and Resilience.”
India’s Maritime Heritage and Future Initiatives
Delivering a special address, Mr. Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, highlighted India’s rich maritime heritage and government initiatives aimed at revitalizing the maritime sector. He cited measures in shipbuilding, shipping modernization, and maritime awareness, noting the Indian Navy’s role in supporting the construction of INSV Kaundinya, a vessel symbolizing India’s historical maritime traditions.
Mr. Sanyal also unveiled the book “Operationalising Project MAUSAM”, published by the NMF, which explores India’s historical and cultural maritime linkages across the Indian Ocean.
Engagement with Pacific Island Nations
The concluding day included discussions on the growing importance of Pacific Island Countries in the Indo-Pacific region. Speakers from France, Germany, India, and Papua New Guinea highlighted the potential for greater collaboration with these nations, emphasizing their strategic role in maintaining maritime balance and connectivity.
In the final session, moderated by Mr. Sanjiv Ranjan, Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), experts called for greater synergy among regional frameworks such as IORA, Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), and ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).
Strengthening Multilateral Maritime Cooperation
The IPRD-2025 served as a crucial platform for policymakers, military leaders, and maritime experts to exchange insights on advancing regional peace, sustainable growth, and strategic coordination. The discussions generated actionable takeaways for building resilient maritime infrastructure and deepening partnerships among Indo-Pacific nations.
As India continues to strengthen its maritime diplomacy, forums like IPRD reinforce New Delhi’s commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific, driven by shared prosperity and security.
