INS Savitri, Seychelles Boost EEZ Surveillance Ties

RR Team, November 22, 2025November 23, 2025
Indian Naval Ship (INS) Savitri, an Offshore Patrol Vessel of the Indian Navy, arrived at Port Victoria, Seychelles, on 22 November 2025 to undertake a port call and a joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance with the Seychelles Coast Guard.

Purpose of the Visit

The port call forms part of INS Savitri’s operational deployment in the Indian Ocean Region and seeks to boost maritime security, situational awareness and interoperability between India and Seychelles. During the visit, Indian and Seychellois personnel will conduct coordinated EEZ patrols to monitor and safeguard maritime resources.

Support and Capacity Building

As a gesture of practical support, INS Savitri handed over critical spares to the Seychelles Coast Guard aimed at enhancing operational readiness of local maritime forces. The transfer underlines India’s continuing role as a partner in capacity building for island nations in the region.

Harbour Activities and Exchanges

The ship hosted a range of harbour activities, including professional interactions, subject-matter expert exchanges and sharing of best practices with Seychelles Coast Guard personnel. INS Savitri also opened her decks to visitors, showcasing Indian Navy traditions and operational capabilities.

Joint EEZ Surveillance: What to Expect

INS Savitri will embark personnel from the Seychelles Coast Guard for collective EEZ surveillance. The joint patrols are expected to focus on fisheries protection, illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing deterrence, and maritime domain awareness across Seychelles’ waters. This joint presence aims to enhance confidence and coordination between both services.

Strategic Context — MAHASAGAR Vision

The visit aligns with India’s MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision that promotes collaborative security and development in the Indian Ocean. Regular ship visits, capacity assistance and joint operations are part of a wider effort to be a reliable security partner and first responder in the region.

Diplomacy at Sea

Port calls such as this one build people-to-people ties and deepen defence diplomacy. Earlier engagements during this deployment included courtesy calls and professional meetings with Seychelles officials to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation.

Local and Regional Impact

For Seychelles, joint patrols with the Indian Navy mean improved monitoring of marine zones and a stronger deterrent against transnational maritime risks. For India, these operations enhance interoperability and field experience for its crews while reinforcing reliable regional partnerships.

For more details on the official statement, see the Press Information Bureau (PIB) release and the Indian Navy’s recent port-call notes.
