The Indian Navy’s stealth frigate, INS Tamal, concluded a successful port call at Naples, Italy, from 13-16 August 2025. The visit highlighted strong bilateral relations between India and Italy, formally elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2023. INS Tamal’s activities during the visit reinforced defence cooperation and maritime diplomacy between the two nations.
PASSEX with Italian Navy
Prior to docking at Naples, INS Tamal conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with ITS Trieste, the newly commissioned Landing Helicopter Dock of the Italian Navy. The exercise included communication drills, manoeuvres, flying operations, and an exchange of sea riders. The PASSEX culminated in a ceremonial steam past, showcasing coordinated naval capabilities and interoperability.
Strategic and Diplomatic Engagements
During the port call, INS Tamal engaged in multiple strategic discussions and professional exchanges with Italian officials. The ship’s Commanding Officer met Vice Admiral Pierpaolo Budri, Chief of Staff of the Logistics Command of the Italian Navy, and Ms Laura Lieto, Deputy Mayor of Naples. These meetings focused on initiatives outlined under the India-Italy Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029, enhancing collaboration in defence and maritime operations.
Cultural Diplomacy and Independence Day Celebrations
INS Tamal, in coordination with the Embassy of India in Rome, hosted a cultural program onboard for Italian Navy officials, local government representatives, the diplomatic corps, UN agency delegates, and defence industry leaders. H. E Mrs Vani Rao, Ambassador of India to Italy, interacted with the crew and senior Italian officers, strengthening people-to-people and professional ties.
On 15 August, the ship’s crew held a ceremonial parade onboard to mark India’s 79th Independence Day. The crew also participated in celebrations at the Indian Embassy in Rome, symbolizing India’s commitment to its national traditions while abroad.
Enhancing Bilateral Naval Cooperation
The port call reflects India’s emphasis on deepening defence ties with Italy. Both navies shared best practices, explored opportunities for joint operations, and strengthened mutual understanding in maritime security. The visit demonstrated India’s focus on building partnerships to address regional and global challenges collaboratively.
Future Naval Diplomacy
Post departure from Naples on 16 August 2025, INS Tamal will continue her journey through European and Asian ports, furthering maritime diplomacy and enhancing bilateral relations. The ship’s overseas deployment underlines India’s growing commitment to global maritime engagement, strategic partnerships, and regional security cooperation.
