The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a precision airstrike in Beirut on Friday, targeting a gathering of senior Hezbollah commanders. The attack, which struck a meeting of the elite Radwan Force in the Dahieh neighborhood, resulted in the death of Ibrahim Aqil, one of Hezbollah’s top commanders, along with several other leaders.
Reports indicate that the strike occurred at a parking structure where over 20 Hezbollah commanders were convened. Utilizing four missiles, the IDF caused significant structural damage, collapsing the floor where the meeting was held, and inflicting heavy casualties. The operation was approved after Israeli intelligence pinpointed the location of the high-level meeting.
The IDF characterized the strike as a crucial opportunity, emphasizing the importance of eliminating these figures in its ongoing conflict with Hezbollah. According to military officials, Aqil and his group were hiding in a residential building in Beirut’s southern suburbs, using civilians as cover.
Hezbollah confirmed the death of Aqil shortly after midnight, referring to the attack as a “treacherous assassination” by Israel. The group has vowed retaliation, heightening fears of further escalation in the already volatile region. Lebanese health officials reported at least 14 fatalities, with the toll expected to rise as rescue efforts continue. The strike marks a significant escalation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, raising concerns about an intensifying conflict.
