Rumours of Extension Dismissed
Over the weekend, social media was flooded with claims that the ITR deadline had been extended to 30 September. The department quickly refuted these reports, terming them “fake news.” Taxpayers were urged to rely only on updates from the official Income Tax India handles and website.
Portal Faces Heavy Traffic
On the final day of filing, users reported difficulty in downloading Annual Information Statements (AIS) and making payments. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) advised taxpayers to clear their browser cache or try alternate browsers if they faced issues. Despite the traffic surge, officials maintained that the portal was functional.
Over Six Crore Returns Filed
According to the department, more than 6 crore ITRs were filed ahead of the due date. This reflects both the growing scale of compliance and the pressure on the system during peak filing periods. Tax experts noted that while digital filing has become easier, infrastructure challenges remain during last-minute rushes.
Penalties for Missing the Deadline
Taxpayers who miss the 15 September deadline will face penalties under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act. The fine is ₹1,000 for those with income below ₹5 lakh and ₹5,000 for those earning above this threshold. In addition, late filers risk losing carry-forward benefits on certain losses.
Advocates Demand Extension
Despite the government’s stance, associations of tax advocates have demanded an extension of the due date to 31 December 2025. They argue that technical glitches, coupled with heavy rains and floods in parts of northern and northeastern India, have made it difficult for professionals and taxpayers to meet the deadline. However, no official response has been given to these demands.
Refund Status: How to Check
Taxpayers who have already filed can check their refund status on the income tax e-filing portal or the TIN-NSDL website. Using PAN and assessment year details, individuals can verify if their refund is processed, pending, or delayed due to incorrect bank details.
Old vs New Tax Regime
As taxpayers filed returns for FY 2024–25, many weighed the choice between the old and new tax regimes. Experts noted that the budget changes announced for the new regime, such as enhanced rebate limits under Section 87A, will apply only from FY 2025–26. For this filing year, taxpayers continue under the existing slab structures.
