J P Nadda at KGMU Convocation: Healthcare Growth

RR Team, December 21, 2025December 20, 2025
Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda addressed the 21st annual convocation of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on 20 December 2025. The event was graced by Smt. Anandiben Patel, Governor of Uttar Pradesh; Shri Brajesh Pathak, Deputy Chief Minister; Shri Pankaj Kumar, Minister of State for Finance; Shri Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh, Minister of State for Health, and Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India.

Celebrating Excellence in Medical Education

Shri Nadda congratulated the graduating students and lauded KGMU for its contributions to medical science, education, and patient care. He highlighted KGMU’s 8th rank in the 2025 NIRF rankings and noted that 12 of its faculties are listed among the top 2% scientists by Stanford University.

The Minister emphasised India’s remarkable progress in healthcare infrastructure, noting that while there was only one AIIMS institution at the end of the last century, today 23 AIIMS operate nationwide, reflecting the government’s commitment to accessible, quality medical education and healthcare.

Growth in Medical Colleges and Seats

Shri Nadda reported that the number of medical colleges increased from 387 to 819 over the last 11 years. Undergraduate seats have risen from 51,000 to 1,19,000, while postgraduate seats have grown from 31,000 to 80,000. Under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s direction, an additional 75,000 medical seats will be added by 2029, with over 23,000 seats already added in the past year.

Strengthening Healthcare Coverage

The Minister highlighted that India now has more than 1.82 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs providing primary care, and over 62 crore people, representing 40% of the population, receive coverage of up to ₹5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat PMJAY scheme. Shri Nadda stressed that professional education is a societal privilege and urged the new doctors to shoulder responsibility and excel in academics, research, and patient care.

Recognition of Achievements

During the convocation, 81 students and one faculty member were honoured for outstanding academic, clinical, and research accomplishments across MBBS, BDS, MD/MS, DM/M.Ch., MDS, M.Sc. Nursing, and faculty categories. Awards included gold and silver medals, certificates of merit, book prizes, cash awards, and recognition for best thesis and best resident. A senior faculty member received a special honour for contributions to medical and allied disciplines.

Remarks by State Leaders

Shri Brajesh Pathak praised KGMU for over 120 years of excellence in medical education, research, and service. He noted that Uttar Pradesh now has 81 fully functional medical colleges compared to 40 in 2017. Dialysis facilities, CT scan machines, and tertiary care infrastructure have been strengthened across all 75 districts.
