Jaishankar, Rubio Reset India‑US Trade & Defence

RR Team, January 14, 2026January 14, 2026
India and the United States signalled efforts to stabilise and advance bilateral ties as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a detailed phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, focusing on trade, defence cooperation, critical minerals, nuclear energy and broader strategic engagement.

The high-level interaction comes at a sensitive moment in India-US relations, which have faced renewed strain following the imposition of steep tariffs by Washington on Indian exports and concerns over global geopolitical alignments.

Wide-Ranging Agenda in Jaishankar-Rubio Call

Confirming the discussion, Jaishankar described the exchange as productive and forward-looking. He said both sides reviewed cooperation across key sectors essential to the long-term strategic partnership between the two democracies.

“Discussed trade, critical minerals, nuclear cooperation, defence and energy,” the External Affairs Minister said in a social media post, adding that both leaders agreed to remain in touch on these and other issues.

The call underlined a shared intent to keep diplomatic channels open despite recent economic and political friction.

Context: Trade Tensions and Tariff Shock

The conversation took place against the backdrop of a significant downturn in ties following US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods. This included a 25% punitive levy linked to India’s purchases of Russian oil.

The tariffs have raised concerns among Indian exporters and policymakers, especially at a time when both countries were negotiating a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement.

Despite multiple rounds of talks last year, the deal remains unsigned, largely due to Washington’s push for greater access to India’s sensitive agriculture and dairy sectors.

US Envoy Signals Fresh Trade Engagement

The Jaishankar-Rubio call came a day after newly appointed US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor indicated that fresh engagement on trade was imminent. Speaking at the US Embassy in New Delhi, Gor said both countries remained actively involved in discussions.

“Both sides continue to actively engage. In fact, the next call on trade will occur tomorrow,” he said, expressing optimism about future progress.

Gor also underscored India’s strategic importance to Washington, stating that no other partner was as essential to US interests in the coming years.

Defence, Energy and Strategic Minerals

Beyond trade, the Jaishankar-Rubio conversation highlighted expanding cooperation in defence and energy, areas that have become pillars of the India-US strategic partnership.

Critical minerals, vital for clean energy technologies and defence manufacturing, featured prominently in the discussion. Both countries have been exploring ways to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on limited global sources.

Nuclear cooperation, another longstanding area of engagement, was also reviewed, reflecting shared interests in energy security and climate goals.

Iran Tariff Decision and Impact on India

The diplomatic outreach coincided with President Trump’s announcement of a 25% tariff on countries doing business with Iran, a move that has drawn global attention.

Indian government sources indicated that the measure would have minimal impact on India, noting that bilateral trade with Iran currently stands at less than $2 billion.

With Iran accounting for just about 0.15% of India’s total trade and not ranking among its top 50 trading partners, officials said India’s exposure remains limited.

Looking Ahead: Managing Differences, Deepening Partnership

Analysts view the Jaishankar-Rubio call as an effort to manage differences while preserving the broader strategic trajectory of India-US relations.

As both sides navigate trade disputes, global security challenges and shifting alliances, sustained dialogue at the highest levels is expected to play a crucial role.
