JP Nadda Appoints NMC Members via Transparent Draw

RR Team, July 15, 2025July 16, 2025

Union Health Minister Shri J P Nadda has taken a significant step to uphold transparency and accountability in India’s medical governance.

On July 15, 2025, he presided over the selection of part-time members of the National Medical Commission (NMC), its Autonomous Boards, and the Search Committee. The appointments were done through a transparent draw of lots, as prescribed in the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.

Transparent Appointments under NMC Act 2019

The NMC Act mandates a fair and randomized selection process for part-time appointments. Accordingly, ten members from State/UT governments and nine members from State Medical Councils have been appointed to the NMC for a period of two years.

Additionally, four members were appointed to the NMC’s Autonomous Boards and one expert from Jammu & Kashmir was selected for the Search Committee.

The presence of media personnel during the draw reinforced the commitment to transparency and procedural fairness.

Who Are the New NMC Part-Time Members?

Ten part-time members were selected from among state nominees to the Medical Advisory Council. These include experts from:

  • Gujarat – Dr. Nirja Arun Gupta
  • Rajasthan – Dr. M K Aseri
  • Himachal Pradesh – Dr. Surender Kashyap
  • Andaman & Nicobar Islands – Dr. Mukesh Tripathi
  • Andhra Pradesh – Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pulala
  • Mizoram – Dr. Dibakar Chandra Deka
  • Meghalaya – Prof. P S Shukla
  • Jharkhand – Prof. (Dr.) Dinesh Kumar Singh
  • Chandigarh – Dr. Suman
  • Madhya Pradesh – Dr. Ashok Khandelwal

State Medical Council Nominees Also Join the Panel

Another nine part-time members were selected from nominees of State Medical Councils. These include representatives from:

  • West Bengal – Dr. Sudipta Kumar Roy
  • Karnataka – Dr. Sharanabasappa S. Karbhari
  • Nagaland – Dr. George Thira
  • Chhattisgarh – Dr. Mahesh Kumar Sinha
  • Tripura – Dr. Kanak Choudhury
  • Jammu & Kashmir – Dr. Sandeep Dogra
  • Assam – Dr. Anup Kumar Barman
  • Manipur – Dr. Simpson Sareo
  • Uttarakhand – Dr. Manoj Kumar Verma

New Faces in Autonomous Boards

Each of NMC’s four Autonomous Boards also received a new part-time member. These experts were selected from State Medical Council nominees:

  • Under-Graduate Medical Education Board: Dr. Jego Ori (Arunachal Pradesh)
  • Post-Graduate Medical Education Board: Dr. Santosh Kumar Mishra (Odisha)
  • Medical Assessment and Rating Board: Dr. Manish Bansal (Haryana)
  • Ethics and Medical Registration Board: Dr. Surinder Pal Singh (Punjab)

Each board plays a crucial role in shaping and regulating different aspects of medical education and practice in India.

Search Committee Expert from Jammu & Kashmir

Dr. Sandeep Dogra, already selected as part-time member from Jammu & Kashmir Medical Council, has also been nominated as an expert member of the NMC Search Committee.

This committee plays a vital role in identifying future leaders for the NMC and its boards.

Event Attended by Senior Officials

Several top officials were present at the draw, including:

  • Smt. Nivedita Shukla Verma, Secretary (Additional Charge), Union Health Ministry
  • Dr. Vinod Kotwal, Additional Secretary, Union Health Ministry

The event was conducted with utmost transparency and received attention from both government officials and media.

Why This Selection Matters

These appointments ensure that India’s medical education and regulatory system remains inclusive and diverse.

The representation from across states and UTs will bring regional expertise and diverse perspectives into national-level medical decision-making.

Moreover, the process reflects the government’s dedication to accountability and transparency in healthcare governance.

About the National Medical Commission (NMC)

The NMC was established in 2020 to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI). It serves as the apex body for regulating medical education and professionals in India.

The commission consists of both full-time and part-time members from across the country. These members help shape policy, educational standards, ethics, and assessment protocols.

Looking Ahead

The appointment of these members sets the stage for the NMC to function with renewed energy and a broader vision.

With expertise from multiple states, and a clear focus on ethics, education, and quality assurance, the NMC is poised to lead India’s healthcare reforms.

As healthcare systems evolve, the role of such dynamic regulatory bodies becomes more important than ever.
