Kamlesh Paswan Reviews Rural Schemes in Majuli

RR Team, February 24, 2026February 25, 2026
Union Minister of State for Rural Development Shri Kamlesh Paswan conducted a comprehensive review of key rural development schemes in Assam’s Majuli district on Tuesday, underscoring the Centre’s focus on housing, connectivity, employment and women-led empowerment.
During his official visit, the Minister assessed the implementation status of flagship schemes of the Ministry of Rural Development and directed officials to maintain quality standards while ensuring timely completion of projects.

Review Meeting with District Officials

The visit began with a review meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where district-level officers briefed the Minister on the physical and financial progress of various schemes. Discussions focused on performance indicators, fund utilisation and monitoring mechanisms.

Shri Paswan emphasised transparency, accountability and adherence to timelines. He instructed officials to address bottlenecks swiftly and ensure that benefits reach eligible beneficiaries without delay.

Officials presented detailed updates on rural housing, livelihood initiatives and connectivity projects. The Minister reiterated that effective implementation on the ground is critical for achieving the government’s rural transformation goals.

Women-Led Development Through SHGs

Interacting with members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), the Minister highlighted the transformative role of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY–NRLM). He noted that Assam has witnessed significant participation of women under the programme.

According to official figures, 39.76 lakh women in the state are associated with 3.62 lakh SHGs. Loans worth ₹23,252 crore have been disbursed, while non-performing assets remain at a low 0.56 per cent, reflecting robust financial discipline.

Shri Paswan praised the contribution of women in strengthening rural economies and stated that women-led development forms the backbone of a “Viksit Bharat”. He encouraged SHG members to expand entrepreneurial activities and leverage government support schemes.

PMAY-G: Housing Progress Reviewed

The Minister inspected houses constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) in Garamur. He interacted with beneficiaries and assessed construction quality.

In Assam, 29.09 lakh houses have been sanctioned under PMAY-G, with 21.33 lakh already completed. In Majuli district alone, 22,349 houses have been approved, of which 20,107 are complete.

Shri Paswan directed officials to expedite completion of remaining houses and ensure durable construction. He stressed that safe and permanent housing is central to rural dignity and social security.

Boosting Rural Connectivity Under PMGSY

The Union Minister also inspected the Madhupur–Puranibari road built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). He reviewed maintenance standards and interacted with local residents.

Statewide data indicates that out of 9,269 sanctioned works under PMGSY in Assam, 9,146 projects — over 98 per cent — have been completed. The Minister underlined that durable roads significantly enhance access to healthcare, education and employment.

He instructed officials to focus on long-term maintenance and quality control, noting that rural connectivity plays a pivotal role in economic integration.

Healthcare and Cultural Engagement

Shri Paswan visited the Rangachahi State Dispensary and the Shri Shri Pitambar Dev Goswami District Hospital in Garamur to review healthcare facilities and service delivery. He assessed infrastructure and availability of medical services.

During his visit, the Minister also paid respects at Shri Shri Auniati Satra and Shri Shri Uttar Kamalabari Satra, acknowledging Majuli’s rich Vaishnavite heritage and cultural legacy.

Centre Reaffirms Commitment to Rural Growth

The visit reinforced the Government of India’s commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure, housing and livelihoods. Shri Paswan reiterated that quality implementation and transparent governance remain top priorities.

He said coordinated efforts between the Centre, state authorities and district administration are essential to achieve inclusive rural development. By focusing on housing, connectivity, women’s empowerment and healthcare, the government aims to accelerate transformation in rural regions like Majuli..
