Karnataka Speaker Introduces Recliners to Boost Legislator Attendance and Engagement

RR Team, February 26, 2025February 26, 2025

In an effort to improve attendance and engagement in the Karnataka Assembly, Speaker UT Khader has introduced a new initiative—renting recliners for legislators who may need a brief rest during post-lunch hours. The move is aimed at ensuring that lawmakers remain present and attentive throughout the sessions, particularly in the afternoons when fatigue can set in.

Khader, a seasoned politician and five-time Congress MLA, has been proactive in implementing measures to create a more conducive environment for legislators. Previously, he arranged for complimentary breakfast and lunch within the Assembly premises to discourage members from stepping out during crucial discussions. His latest initiative is another step toward fostering better participation and efficiency in legislative proceedings.

The plan will see 15 recliners installed in the lounges of both the ruling and opposition parties before the upcoming Budget Session on March 3. Given that Assembly sessions typically last for about three months each year, the Secretariat has opted to rent rather than purchase the recliners, ensuring a cost-effective approach to the initiative.

The ruling Congress, which currently holds 137 seats in the 225-member Assembly, is expected to benefit from these changes, as improved comfort could lead to more active participation in debates and discussions. While some may view this move as a luxury, others see it as a practical solution to address a common challenge faced by legislators who endure long hours of deliberation.

By prioritizing the well-being of lawmakers, Speaker Khader hopes to create a more productive and engaging legislative environment. Whether this initiative will set a precedent for other states remains to be seen, but for now, Karnataka is taking a step toward ensuring its representatives remain alert and present for the important decisions that shape the state’s future.
