Historic Visit Strengthened Ties
Alipur holds a unique connection with Khamenei, who visited the village in 1981 as a 41-year-old cleric. During his visit, he inaugurated the Imam Khomeini Hospital, a landmark that strengthened the village’s spiritual and cultural ties with Iran. The hospital continues to be managed by the local Anjuman-e-Jafaria Committee.
Shafeeq Abidi, a prominent Urdu poet and former journalist from Alipur, recalled that Khamenei’s visit was part of the outreach initiatives following Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. “Today, we are all in grief and mourning following the death of Khamenei,” he said.
Community Response and Mourning
Alipur, located about 70 km from Bengaluru, has nearly 25,000 residents, of whom around 90% are Shia Muslims. Following Khamenei’s death, the Shia community called for a three-day mourning period and organized a protest march to condemn the circumstances of his demise.
Chickballapur Superintendent of Police Kushal Chouksey met with village elders and the Anjuman-e-Jafaria Committee to ensure peace during the mourning period. Approximately 3,000 people participated in a prayer procession, with many dressed in black, black flags displayed, and shops voluntarily closed as a mark of respect.
Safety Concerns for Villagers in Iran
Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, authorities are monitoring the safety of around 150 Alipur residents currently in Iran for religious studies, medical education, pilgrimage, or business. Police have coordinated with higher officials to ensure their wellbeing. Local sources report that most villagers are safe, with the Indian Embassy in Tehran maintaining contact.
Deep Cultural and Religious Links
Alipur’s historical and religious ties to Iran date back to the Adil Shahi dynasty of the Bijapur Sultanate. As a predominantly Shia Muslim village, many young residents pursue theological studies and MBBS courses in Iran, benefiting from both cultural affinity and comparatively affordable education.
These long-standing connections have made Khamenei’s death particularly poignant for the community, highlighting the enduring bonds between Alipur and Iran.
