Kashmir Mobile Internet Speeds Restricted Amid Khamenei Protests

Srinagar, Mar 3 : Mobile internet speeds have been throttled across Kashmir following widespread protests against the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, officials said on Monday. The step is a precautionary measure aimed at maintaining law and order in the region.

Protests Erupt Across Kashmir

Khamenei was killed in an airstrike in Tehran on Saturday during a joint Israel-US attack. Iranian state media confirmed his death on Sunday, prompting mourning and protests globally, including in India. In Kashmir, which has a population of approximately 15 lakh Shias, demonstrations erupted in Lal Chowk, Saida Kadal, Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag, and Pulwama.

Protesters were seen beating their chests while shouting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans. Authorities responded by curtailing high-speed mobile internet access across all networks in the valley to prevent escalation and maintain public order.

Official Advisory on Reporting

The Jammu and Kashmir police issued an advisory urging media organizations and digital platforms to exercise utmost responsibility. “Please refrain from publishing unverified information, speculation, or rumours; ensure that all reports are confirmed through credible and authoritative sources before dissemination; and avoid sensational headlines that may create unnecessary panic,” the advisory read.

The police emphasized that responsible reporting is essential to maintain public trust and prevent misinformation during sensitive situations.

Impact and Precautionary Measures

The throttling of mobile internet speeds is aimed at limiting the rapid spread of misinformation and potential coordination of unrest through social media. Schools and colleges in the region have been advised to remain closed for the next two days, according to local education authorities.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing dialogue and restraint. Residents are urged to follow official channels for updates and maintain calm during this period.
