Kedarnath Yatra Halted After Landslide in Sonprayag

RR Team, July 26, 2025July 26, 2025

Devotion Meets Disaster: Pilgrims Trapped in Sonprayag

The sacred Kedarnath Yatra came to an abrupt halt after a massive landslide struck near Sonprayag. The route was partially blocked, stranding over 100 pilgrims mid-journey. The natural disaster occurred early in the morning and triggered a swift response from local authorities.

A rescue team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), led by Sub-Inspector Ashish Dimri, rushed to the site. Their mission was clear—bring every trapped pilgrim to safety. Within hours, the team successfully evacuated all stranded individuals.

100 Pilgrims Rescued Safely

Thanks to prompt coordination and efficient execution, around 100 pilgrims were rescued without major injuries. The SDRF team worked tirelessly through debris, ensuring no one was left behind. Videos from the site show relieved families expressing gratitude and hugging their rescuers.

“It was terrifying, but we’re grateful to the team that pulled us out,” said Rekha Singh, a pilgrim from Bihar. The rescue was a shining example of teamwork and human resilience.

PWD Steps In With Alternate Route

While SDRF handled the rescue, labourers from the Public Works Department (PWD) immediately began constructing an alternate route. The blocked passage near Sonprayag remains unstable. Until it’s deemed safe, all movement remains diverted.

Officials confirmed that the alternate route would be operational by late evening. However, pilgrims are advised to wait for official confirmation before resuming the yatra.

Weather Woes Continue in Uttarakhand

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for multiple districts in Uttarakhand. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Dehradun, Champawat, Nainital, and hilly areas of Rudraprayag.

IMD also warned of thunderstorms and lightning, especially in Udham Singh Nagar. This alert is valid till July 31, making it a critical period for pilgrims and local residents.

Kedarghati: A Village Underwater

In Rumsi village of Kedarghati, the damage is severe. Continuous rainfall has flooded homes and buried vehicles under mud and rock. Local videos reveal heartbreaking visuals of residents wading through water and salvaging belongings.

More than half a dozen homes have been affected, and roads leading to the village are impassable. Relief efforts are underway, but persistent rain is slowing progress.

Administration on High Alert

The Uttarakhand administration has gone into emergency mode. District officers have been instructed to monitor river levels and landslide-prone zones around the clock. Tourists and pilgrims are being advised to avoid riverbanks and steep mountainous routes.

“We are committed to the safety of every pilgrim and citizen,” said a Rudraprayag official. Temporary shelters, food supplies, and medical support have been arranged in Sonprayag and Gaurikund.

What Pilgrims Should Do Now

If you’re planning to visit Kedarnath in the coming days, stay updated with official travel advisories. Avoid non-essential travel to the region until the weather stabilizes. Download the Uttarakhand Disaster Alert app for real-time updates.

Family members of pilgrims can call the State Helpline Number: 1070 for information about loved ones. Authorities have assured that all pilgrims currently in the region are safe and accounted for.

A Journey of Faith and Courage

The Kedarnath Yatra symbolizes devotion, endurance, and spirituality. This landslide has tested the system, but it also showcased the strength of human resolve. From SDRF’s fearless efforts to PWD’s quick action, every hand has worked tirelessly.

Nature can disrupt, but it can never defeat faith. The road to Kedarnath may be blocked, but the spirit of the yatra continues unshaken.
