Kerala Rains: IMD Issues Orange Alert in 9 Districts

Heavy Rains Lash Kerala as IMD Sounds Orange Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for nine districts in Kerala on Sunday, July 20, 2025, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The affected districts are Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargode. Residents are advised to take precautionary measures.

Yellow Alert for Southern Kerala

The IMD has also sounded a yellow alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam. These areas are expected to receive isolated heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds.

The rainfall is likely to intensify due to a depression over northeast Rajasthan and adjoining Uttar Pradesh, according to IMD officials.

Red Alert Anticipated in More Districts

As weather conditions continue to deteriorate, the IMD may issue red alerts for additional districts. A red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall and a potential risk to life and property.

The IMD will release an updated weather bulletin by 1 p.m. on Sunday. People in vulnerable areas are advised to remain alert and follow updates closely.

Impact on Daily Life and Travel

Waterlogging and disruption of transport are already being reported in parts of Palakkad and Kozhikode. Two-wheeler riders and pedestrians are facing difficulties navigating waterlogged roads.

Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors, especially in low-lying regions prone to flooding.

Preparedness Measures by Authorities

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has activated emergency control rooms in all affected districts. Local authorities are coordinating with fire and rescue services.

Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea as the Arabian Sea remains turbulent. Schools in high-risk zones may remain closed if rain intensifies.

What to Expect in the Coming Days

The IMD predicts continued rainfall in the coming week, especially in central and northern Kerala. Monsoon conditions remain active, with increased cloud cover and humidity levels.
