Know Your Weaves Campaign 2025 Begins in Delhi

RR Team, August 2, 2025August 2, 2025

The Ministry of Textiles has kicked off the vibrant “Know Your Weaves Campaign 2025”, a nationwide initiative to celebrate and promote India’s rich handloom culture. The campaign runs from August 1 to 7, 2025, culminating on National Handloom Day at the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy, New Delhi.

Empowering Tradition Through Celebration

The event was inaugurated by Smt. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles. She was joined by Smt. Amrit Raj (DC Handicrafts), Dr. M. Beena (DC Handlooms), and representatives from schools, colleges, and artisan communities.

In her address, Smt. Rao emphasized the importance of educating the younger generation about India’s diverse handloom traditions. She urged youth to engage with weavers, appreciate their art, and carry forward India’s textile legacy.

Why “Know Your Weaves” Matters

This campaign is not just an event. It’s a movement. It highlights the stories, skills, and spirit behind India’s iconic handwoven fabrics.

From the elegance of Banarasi sarees to the intricate charm of Chanderi, the bold patterns of Pochampally Ikat to the regal flair of Kanjeevaram—the campaign showcases over a dozen weaving traditions from across the nation.

Key Highlights of the Campaign

  • Weave Exhibition Pavilion: Live demonstrations and displays of India’s iconic weaves, crafted by master artisans on-site.
  • Interactive Workshops: Learn natural dyeing techniques, understand traditional loom operations, and take part in quizzes and educational sessions.
  • Storytelling Installations: Hear the journey of India’s handlooms through films, personal weaver stories, and archival footage.
  • Youth Engagement: School and college students can participate in guided tours, art competitions, and hands-on weaving experiences.

A Platform for Weavers and Designers

One of the most powerful aspects of the “Know Your Weaves Campaign” is that it creates a bridge between weavers, designers, and the public. Visitors can interact directly with artisans who have preserved their family’s weaving traditions for generations.

Not only does this platform celebrate heritage, but it also provides visibility and economic opportunity to artisans across India.

Legacy and Growth

Last year, the campaign drew 7,900 students from 58 schools during its fortnight-long celebration. This year, the Ministry has condensed it into a focused week of activity, making it even more engaging and impactful.

As a curtain raiser to National Handloom Day (August 7), this campaign is part of the Ministry’s annual calendar, strengthening India’s global identity as a hub of sustainable, handcrafted textiles.

Engaging India’s Youth

The Ministry is especially targeting the youth. Special outreach programs have been designed for students to experience handloom-making first-hand. From tactile experiences at weaving looms to storytelling sessions with veteran artisans, the aim is to instill pride and curiosity.

Young people are also invited to share their experiences on social media using the hashtag #KnowYourWeaves, encouraging a digital movement in support of India’s textile crafts.

A Call to Action

Handloom is not just fabric—it’s a way of life. It reflects India’s culture, identity, and ingenuity. By visiting this campaign, buying local handloom, and spreading awareness, every Indian can play a part in preserving this heritage.

As Smt. Rao rightly said, “Let’s make it our mission to know our weaves and honour the hands that create them.”

Plan Your Visit

Date: August 1–7, 2025
Venue: National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi
Entry: Free and open to all

Conclusion

The “Know Your Weaves Campaign 2025” is more than an event—it’s a cultural revival. It invites every Indian to reconnect with their roots, understand the skill behind every thread, and take pride in our handloom legacy.

Be there. Celebrate India’s weaves. Support the artisans who keep our traditions alive.
