Assessing Bus Route Adjustments
Addressing the press on Wednesday, Minister Chakraborty stated that the government is currently reviewing bus routes where passenger numbers have dropped significantly. Routes such as Howrah–Sector V, New Garia–Beleghata, Howrah–Santragachi, and Howrah–Ultadanga have experienced a 20–30% decline in ridership. Private operators have expressed concerns over the sudden dip following the Metro extension.
“We are taking stock of the situation. Some buses may be withdrawn from over-served routes and redeployed where commuter demand is higher,” Chakraborty said, hinting at a careful route rationalisation process aimed at optimising the city’s public transport system.
Feeder Services and Connectivity Enhancements
In addition to route adjustments, the Transport Minister indicated that the government is considering feeder stage carriage services, including autos and buses, to connect areas not directly served by the Metro network. These services aim to improve accessibility and reduce transit gaps for daily commuters.
Tapan Bandyopadhyay, Joint Council of Bus Syndicate secretary, described the current drop in ridership as temporary. He expects regular bus commuters to return once the initial excitement of the new Metro services settles.
Durga Puja Special Bus Services
With Durga Puja around the corner, Kolkata commuters can also expect a series of festive transport arrangements. Starting two weeks before the five-day festival, the government will deploy ‘Puja Special Buses’ at key locations including Howrah, Sealdah, and Esplanade. These additional 25 buses can be increased based on passenger demand.
Special Volvo AC buses will operate from Mahasasthi to Mahanabami, covering 12 award-winning pandals across north and south Kolkata. Another dedicated service will cater to Bonedi Barir Pujo, traditional celebrations at historic aristocratic residences.
For late-night visitors returning home after pandal hopping, the government will run special night services across the city.

The rationalisation of bus routes reflects a broader effort by West Bengal authorities to integrate different modes of public transport efficiently. By balancing Metro and bus services, the government aims to enhance commuter convenience while maintaining optimal utilisation of resources.
