Kolkata Gang-Rape Case: Accused Calls Injuries ‘Love Bites’

RR Team, July 2, 2025July 2, 2025

Kolkata, July 2, 2025:
In a shocking development, Monojit Mishra—the main accused in the gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student in Kolkata—has claimed that the scratch marks on his body are actually “love bites.” His lawyer, Raju Ganguly, revealed this during a media interaction, adding a controversial twist to the already disturbing case.

Lawyer Dismisses Injuries as ‘Love Bites’

While speaking to ANI, Ganguly shared how he questioned Mishra about the allegations and the visible marks. “He removed his shirt. I pointed to one mark on his neck and asked what it was. He told me it was a love bite,” the lawyer explained.

As Ganguly probed further, police officers intervened and escorted Mishra away. According to the lawyer, he did not observe any deep scratch marks, except the one on the neck. However, this version of the story directly contradicts earlier medical reports.

Lawyer Wants Victim’s Phone Examined

Ganguly also called for the forensic examination of the survivor’s mobile phone. He argued that phone records, messages, and call logs could help uncover the nature of the accused-survivor relationship. He believes this could challenge the prosecution’s claims and shed light on missing details.

Timeline: What Happened on June 25?

The alleged gang-rape took place inside a security guard’s room at South Calcutta Law College. According to police reports, the crime occurred during college hours. Law enforcement officials arrested Monojit Mishra first, followed by his co-accused—Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, who were both students at the same college.

Later, the police apprehended the college security guard, Pinaki Bandyopadhyay, for his role in the incident.

Medical Reports Reveal Physical Struggle

Medical examinations supported the survivor’s claims. Doctors found signs of forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail-inflicted injuries on her body. Meanwhile, the forensic team noted fresh scratch marks on Mishra, which appeared to be consistent with a violent struggle.

According to a senior police officer, “These are fresh wounds. They indicate that the victim resisted the assault.” These findings validate the survivor’s testimony.

CCTV Footage Strengthens Survivor’s Claim

Additionally, CCTV footage from the college premises has become a crucial piece of evidence. The video, retrieved by the police, shows the accused dragging the woman inside the college compound.

This footage directly supports the survivor’s version of the events and is expected to play a key role during the trial.

Legal Debate Heats Up

As the case moves forward, legal arguments are intensifying. On one hand, the prosecution stresses the importance of forensic and video evidence. On the other hand, the defense continues to challenge the findings and demands a broader digital investigation.

Speaking to reporters, Ganguly said, “I have not yet formed a final opinion. By July 20, I’ll be in a better position to judge if this is really a case of rape.”

Protests Grow Across Kolkata

Meanwhile, public anger is rising. Students, women’s rights activists, and civil society groups have staged protests outside South Calcutta Law College. They are demanding immediate justice and strict action against the accused.

Protesters also criticized the college administration for its alleged failure to ensure campus safety. Several student organizations have called for a fast-track court hearing to prevent delays.

Conclusion

This gang-rape case has now become a legal battleground between two contrasting narratives. While the medical and video evidence strongly back the survivor, the defense continues to raise doubts and push for further investigation.

As the investigation unfolds, the nation watches closely. The next few weeks will determine whether the justice system can rise to the occasion and deliver a fair and timely verdict.
