Kolkata on Alert as Thunderstorms Loom and Cyclone ‘Shakti’ Speculation Grows

Kolkata is bracing for a spell of unstable weather, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of thunderstorms and rainfall over the coming days. The city has been placed under a yellow alert, urging residents to remain cautious, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when the weather is expected to be most unpredictable.

The forecast for the next few days indicates cloudy skies and intermittent rain, with moderate showers and occasional thunderstorms likely from May 15 through May 19. People in the city are being advised to carry umbrellas, stay indoors during lightning spells, and keep an eye on official weather updates.

Amid this unsettled weather, reports have begun circulating about a possible cyclonic formation in the Bay of Bengal, tentatively named ‘Cyclone Shakti.’ While speculation points toward its development between May 23 and 28, the IMD has not officially confirmed any such formation. Still, early signs of the southwest monsoon advancing into parts of the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal are being closely monitored.

Concerns are understandable. Memories of past cyclones and their disruptive impacts remain fresh in the minds of many residents. The very mention of a potential cyclone can cause anxiety, particularly among vulnerable communities who face the brunt of nature’s fury. For now, the official word remains cautious. The IMD has reiterated that while several regions may experience heavy rainfall due to evolving weather systems, no confirmed cyclone is on the radar as of yet.

As uncertainty looms, Kolkatans are hoping for clarity, safety, and a quick return to normalcy. The resilience of the people shines through yet again, as they prepare once more to face the unpredictable moods of the skies.
