Kolkata Rain Alert: IMD Warns of Flight Delays

RR Team, July 8, 2025July 8, 2025

Kolkata Braces for Heavy Rain and Flight Delays

Kolkata is under weather watch. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for July 8 and 9. The city is expected to see heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, and the impact is already visible—flight schedules may face disruptions.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Kolkata

The alert was issued due to forecasts of severe rain, gusty winds, and lightning. Tuesday’s showers have already begun affecting regular life in Kolkata, with roads waterlogged and public transport facing delays.

The warning will remain in place till July 9. IMD has advised residents to stay indoors during intense spells of rain and take necessary precautions.

Flight Delays and Airline Alerts

Due to the weather, flight operations at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport may be disrupted. Low visibility, water pooling, and lightning have raised concerns among air traffic controllers and airlines.

SpiceJet, one of the key domestic airlines, issued a public advisory:
“Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Kolkata (CCU), all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights may get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via our website or mobile app.”

Skymet Predicts Widespread Rain Across Bengal

Private weather agency Skymet has also confirmed similar conditions. In a social media post, they warned of light to moderate rainfall across districts of West Bengal including Howrah, Hooghly, Nadia, Bankura, and both North and South 24 Parganas.

They also indicated chances of thunderstorms in Birbhum, Murshidabad, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, and Purulia.

Kolkata’s Weekly Weather Forecast

  • July 8: Heavy rain, thunderstorm, yellow alert in effect.
  • July 9: Cloudy skies with thunderstorm risk; alert continues.
  • July 10: Cloudy, occasional light showers; no weather warning.
  • July 11: Intermittent light rain expected, partly cloudy skies.
  • July 12–13: Cloudy weather with chances of rain or thunderstorms, but no active alerts.

City Gears Up For Rain Challenges

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has activated emergency drainage response teams in flood-prone areas. Pumps are on standby in regions like Behala, Topsia, and Salt Lake, where water accumulation is a regular challenge.

Citizens are advised to avoid commuting during peak rain hours. Schools and offices may switch to remote schedules if downpours worsen.

Tips to Stay Safe During the Rain Alert

  • Avoid traveling during peak rain hours unless absolutely necessary.
  • Charge your phones and devices in advance to avoid power-related issues.
  • Use official weather sources like IMD or airline apps for latest updates.
  • Don’t take shelter under trees or power poles during thunderstorms.

Why This Alert Matters

Kolkata’s vulnerability to urban flooding and power outages makes this warning significant. Monsoon rains often overwhelm the city’s outdated drainage system. The yellow alert is meant to help citizens prepare rather than panic.

With flight delays expected and traffic likely to be affected, early planning is key. Both IMD and Skymet have stressed that precaution is better than cure.

Conclusion

The next 48 hours are crucial for Kolkata. While the rain offers relief from the summer heat, it also brings potential risks. As the yellow alert continues, stay informed, stay indoors when possible, and follow official advisories.
