Liberian Container Ship Lists Near Kochi; Indian Coast Guard Leads Urgent Rescue Efforts

A Liberian container vessel, MSC ELSA 3, encountered a serious emergency on May 24, 2025, when it developed a dangerous 26-degree list about 38 nautical miles southwest of Kochi. Having left Vizhinjam Port just the day before, the ship was heading toward Kochi when it sent out a distress signal, prompting immediate action.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) quickly took charge of the rescue operation, mobilizing ships and aircraft to assist the vessel and its crew of 24. So far, nine crew members have been safely rescued, while rescue teams continue their efforts to evacuate the remaining 15. To aid in the evacuation, ICG aircraft have also airdropped extra life-rafts to those still onboard.

In a coordinated effort, the Directorate General of Shipping is working closely with the Coast Guard and has instructed the ship’s management to arrange for urgent salvage operations. The ongoing rescue reflects the dedication and swift response of India’s maritime authorities in protecting lives at sea under difficult circumstances.
