Lok Sabha Speaker Praises India’s Democracy at Commonwealth

RR Team, October 12, 2025October 12, 2025
New Delhi, October 12, 2025: Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla addressed the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference, highlighting India as a living example of democracy, equality, and justice. Speaking on the theme “The Commonwealth – A Global Partner,” he emphasized that India’s Constitution has been a guiding beacon for the past 75 years, shaping the nation’s identity and democratic values.

Collective Global Efforts Needed

Shri Birla stressed that challenges such as climate change, pandemics, food insecurity, and inequality transcend borders and require collaborative global solutions. He called for collective action to address these issues, emphasizing that solutions cannot be achieved in isolation.

He highlighted India’s pivotal role in global food and nutrition security, recalling the country’s historic journey from dependence on imports to becoming a reliable provider of food and health resources worldwide. Shri Birla cited India’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic, supplying medicines and vaccines to over 150 nations.

India’s Commitment to Sustainability and Democracy

Shri Birla underscored India’s status as the world’s largest democracy and the fastest-growing major economy. He proudly noted that India is the first major country to meet the Paris Agreement targets ahead of schedule. Initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure demonstrate India’s commitment to global environmental responsibility.

He also highlighted women’s empowerment, mentioning that over 1.4 million women are elected representatives in rural Panchayati Raj institutions. He cited the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, ensuring one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures, reflecting India’s prioritization of youth and women in governance.

Technology for Transparency and Good Governance

Shri Birla emphasized the role of technology, including AI and digital platforms, in enhancing transparency and effectiveness of democratic institutions. He advocated for global standards to ensure technology serves humanity, fostering innovation while minimizing harm and ensuring inclusive benefits.

Heritage and Values

Referring to India’s ancient democratic traditions, Shri Birla noted that dialogue, consensus, and collective decision-making have been integral to India’s governance for centuries. He highlighted the ancient philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ which emphasizes global unity and shared responsibility.

Shri Birla also noted the unity of the Commonwealth, stating that despite diverse languages, cultures, and geographies, its citizens share the values of democracy, freedom, and human dignity. He invited presiding officers to the next Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC) in New Delhi from 7 to 9 January 2026.
