Lok Sabha Speaker Stresses Timely Justice for Human Dignity

RR Team, September 4, 2025September 4, 2025
New Delhi, September 4: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called for greater public discourse and institutional cooperation to uphold human dignity by ensuring timely justice. Speaking at the 11th Dr. L. M. Singhvi Memorial Lecture in New Delhi, he highlighted the need for citizens, thinkers, and policymakers to work together to eliminate systemic delays in the delivery of justice.
The event, themed “Human Dignity as the Soul of the Constitution: Judicial Reflections in the 21st Century”, brought together lawmakers, jurists, and scholars to reflect on the challenges and opportunities within India’s legal and democratic systems. Chief Justice of India B. R. Gavai also addressed the gathering, reinforcing the importance of judicial reforms in strengthening democracy.

Constitutional Foundations of Human Dignity

Birla underlined that India’s Constitution, drafted under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, enshrines equality, justice, socio-economic rights, and freedoms with special emphasis on human dignity. He noted that these principles are not just legal safeguards but moral commitments that must guide governance in the 21st century.

He urged society to reflect on the constitutional promise of justice and its fulfillment in daily life. “Our democracy is incomplete unless justice is accessible, affordable, and timely for every citizen,” Birla said, emphasizing that justice delayed often amounts to justice denied.

Call for Collaborative Reforms

Addressing structural bottlenecks in India’s judicial and administrative systems, the Speaker stressed the importance of synergy between the judiciary, executive, and legislature. He said these institutions must act as complementary pillars rather than competing entities, with a shared goal of protecting human dignity.

Birla noted that India has been steadily reforming its legal framework to align with democratic values and contemporary challenges. However, he admitted that persistent issues such as case backlogs, procedural complexities, and lack of awareness among citizens require comprehensive reforms and sustained dialogue.

Remembering Dr. L. M. Singhvi

Paying tribute to Dr. L. M. Singhvi, Birla described him as a jurist, diplomat, scholar, and parliamentarian whose legacy continues to inspire. Singhvi, known globally for his constitutional expertise, made notable contributions to promoting Indian democracy, culture, and knowledge worldwide.

“Dr. Singhvi’s life shows us that scholarship, creativity, and service can be harmoniously blended,” Birla said. He recalled Singhvi’s role in the drafting of constitutions beyond India and his efforts to uphold the dignity of Indians abroad. His multifaceted contributions, Birla added, encourage young Indians to innovate and participate meaningfully in nation-building.

Scholarly Reflections and Democratic Strength

The Speaker also praised the contributions of scholars and legal thinkers who continue to strengthen India’s democratic institutions. He emphasized that public dialogue, academic research, and judicial reflection play an essential role in aligning governance with the evolving aspirations of society.

By highlighting India’s constitutional vision and the importance of dialogue among stakeholders, Birla’s address underscored the collective responsibility of citizens and institutions to uphold justice and human dignity as cornerstones of democracy.
