Mamata Banerjee Urges Doctors: ‘Please Come Forward and Speak Up

RR Team, September 14, 2024September 14, 2024

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s attempt to resolve the ongoing standoff with protesting doctors faced a setback on Saturday. Doctors who had gathered at Banerjee’s residence for negotiations left after nearly two hours, unable to reach an agreement over the live-streaming of their meeting.

The doctors insisted on broadcasting the talks live, but Banerjee refused, citing that the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case is currently under review by the Supreme Court. I am requesting you to come and talk, as you had asked for today’s meeting. At least join me for tea. Why this disrespect? I keep waiting, but it seems you’re not interested in meeting. Let’s put politics aside for now. I will sign the minutes, but live-streaming can only happen with Supreme Court permission, Banerjee stated.

Earlier in the day, Banerjee made a surprise visit to the protest site where doctors have been staging a sit-in since last month, following the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. Addressing the protesters directly, Banerjee appealed for a moment of attention amidst the chanting, expressing empathy for their suffering. Please listen to me for five minutes before resuming your slogans. I know your struggle and have experienced similar movements. I am here to acknowledge your pain and efforts, she said.

In her address, Banerjee urged the doctors to return to work, promising that their demands would be taken seriously. She assured them that the government would carefully review their concerns, consult with relevant officials, and ensure that justice is served. I will discuss your demands with the chief secretary, home secretary, and director general of police. Action will be taken against anyone found guilty. I want justice for Tilottama. I will also request the CBI to expedite their investigation, she added.

Banerjee acknowledged the prolonged nature of the protests and the impact on both the doctors and patients. She appealed for a return to work, emphasizing that families are worried and patients have suffered due to the strike. Return to work. I will ensure that no injustice occurs. Committees will be set up in every hospital to include senior and junior doctors. Anyone guilty will be punished, regardless of their connections. Please discuss among yourselves and return to work. I won’t take harsh actions like in Uttar Pradesh, she said.

This is my final attempt to resolve the crisis. If you trust me, I will address your complaints. The Supreme Court case is ongoing, and the next hearing is on Tuesday. I don’t want you to continue suffering. I am making this request as your didi, not just as a chief minister. I understand your pain and support your protest, Banerjee concluded
