RR Team, December 27, 2024December 27, 2024

Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at 9:51 PM at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He was 92 years old. Dr. Singh, known as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led UPA government.

AIIMS Statement on the Passing

In a statement, AIIMS confirmed, Dr. Manmohan Singh was brought to the emergency department at 8:06 PM following a sudden loss of consciousness. Despite resuscitative efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.” The hospital also noted that he had been undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.

A Nation Mourns

The government has announced a seven-day national mourning period to honour the leader. Condolences have poured in from across the political spectrum and global leaders. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Dr Singh’s residence to pay their last respects. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, expressing his sorrow, called Dr Singh a mentor and a guide.

Tributes Highlight His Legacy

Dr Singh’s contributions as an economist, Finance Minister, and Prime Minister were celebrated by leaders across party lines. Naveen Jindal recalled his pivotal role in dismantling the License Raj in 1991, while Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy praised his economic reforms that ensured India’s financial stability. International organizations, including the US-India Business Council, acknowledged his role in fostering strategic ties between India and the United States.

Last Rites Await Family Arrival

Dr Singh’s last rites will be conducted in Delhi near Rajghat. Arrangements are currently on hold, awaiting the arrival of his daughter, who is travelling from abroad. The Congress Working Committee will convene later today at the AICC headquarters to honour his memory.

Reflections on a Remarkable Life

Renowned for his humility and integrity, Dr. Singh left a legacy of economic reform and quiet yet impactful leadership. As Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha remarked, “In an era of noise, he upheld the importance of unity and collaboration. Dr. Manmohan Singh’s passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a nation deeply indebted to his vision and leadership.
