Empowering Education Through Scholarships
The Ministry of Education has taken a bold step to spread awareness about the National Means cum Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS). On August 2, 2025, the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) organized an intensive awareness session in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
The event was chaired by Smt. A. Srija, Economic Advisor, DoSEL. She addressed over 200 participants from Meerut Mandal, including District Nodal Officers (DNOs), school heads, and teachers.
The NMMSS scholarship scheme provides crucial financial assistance to meritorious students from economically weaker sections. It aims to reduce dropout rates and support students from Class IX to XII in continuing their education.
Each selected student receives ₹12,000 annually through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring transparency and efficiency. The scheme is available only to students of government and government-aided schools. It excludes KVS, NVS, and other government residential schools.
Uttar Pradesh Leads with Highest Quota
During the session, Smt. Srija pointed out that Uttar Pradesh holds the highest quota for NMMSS with 15,000 fresh scholarships allotted every year. She emphasized the importance of timely verification of applications on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).
Verification ensures that only the most deserving and eligible students benefit from the scheme.
Onboarding and OTR Simplify Access
Since 2018–19, the NMMSS is fully onboarded on the NSP. Students must complete their One Time Registration (OTR) in Class IX using their or their parent’s Aadhaar card. This step is essential for applying not only for NMMSS but also other scholarships available through Central Ministries and States/UTs.
To prevent duplicate benefits, NSP introduced mandatory OTR from 2024–25.
Live Demonstration of NSP Process
DoSEL officials conducted a live demonstration of the scholarship application process. They highlighted common mistakes students make during OTR and explained how teachers and DNOs should guide them.
The system includes two levels of verification—first by school-level nodal officers and second by DNOs. Once approved, applications reflect on the NSP for disbursement.
Renewals and Selection Exams
While new students apply in Class IX, students in Classes X, XI, and XII must apply for renewal. To be eligible, they must score at least 60% marks and get promoted to the next class level.
Each year, States and UTs conduct selection exams to identify new eligible students. The process ensures merit remains a key criterion.
Biometric Verification for Transparency
To enhance security and eliminate fraud, the application process now includes biometric authentication. Students and their parents must link Aadhaar with their bank accounts to receive the DBT payments.
Likewise, nodal officers must verify applications using their own Aadhaar-linked biometric IDs. This new layer of verification reinforces the system’s credibility.
Beyond Scholarships: A Holistic Education Approach
DoSEL didn’t limit the session to NMMSS. They also introduced participants to:
- Vidyanjali – The School Volunteer Initiative for CSR and community involvement
- School Challenge via MyGov to promote awareness against tobacco consumption
- Universal Design for Learning (UDL) textbooks being developed by NCERT
These efforts aim to improve learning outcomes and build inclusive educational environments across the country.

The session saw enthusiastic participation from school heads, teachers, and officers from Baghpat, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Hapur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, and Shamli.
“This training has cleared our doubts and made us confident about helping students apply on NSP,” said a teacher from Ghaziabad.
