Key Reforms in Exploration Approvals

Previously, approval of exploration programs required evaluation by a committee constituted in January 2022. Under the new framework, GRs prepared by Notified Accredited Prospecting Agencies (APAs), accredited by QCI-NABET and peer-reviewed by another APA, no longer require committee clearance. This step is expected to save at least three months in approval timelines, enabling earlier operationalisation of coal blocks.
Boosting Private Sector Participation
The reform underscores the Government’s confidence in private APAs. By leveraging their technological expertise, efficiency, and innovation, the Ministry of Coal aims to strengthen exploration capabilities while maintaining strict technical standards and transparency. Early completion of GR approvals will facilitate timely milestone achievements for coal block allottees.
Strengthening India’s Energy Security
With India’s growing energy demands, these reforms are pivotal for building a robust coal ecosystem. Streamlined approvals, increased private participation, and modern exploration methods will enhance operational efficiency and contribute to sustainable utilisation of the nation’s coal resources. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of a self-reliant and energy-secure Bharat.
Official Guidelines and Reference
The Ministry of Coal has made the updated methodology available online for public reference.
Through these progressive measures, the Ministry of Coal continues to strengthen India’s energy infrastructure and support sustainable development, paving the way for a future-ready energy landscape.
