70% Cases Linked to Sexual Transmission
Speaking at an awareness programme organised by the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society in collaboration with AHF India Cares on International Condom Day, Lalrinpuii revealed that nearly 70 percent of HIV cases in the state are transmitted through sexual contact.
The event, themed “Just Use It,” focused on normalising condom usage and addressing misconceptions around preventive measures. The minister stressed that the rise in sexually transmitted HIV cases requires both public awareness and behavioural change.
“This is not just a health issue; it reflects on us as a society,” she said, urging young adults to act responsibly in relationships and take necessary precautions.
Why Are HIV Cases Rising in Mizoram?
According to the Health Minister, factors contributing to the high HIV rate include lack of awareness, unsafe sexual practices, and failure to adopt preventive measures. She pointed out that such trends contradict the deeply rooted religious and social values of the Mizo community.
While abstinence before marriage was described as ideal, she acknowledged the need for realistic approaches. “Those who are sexually active must protect themselves and their partners. Using a condom is a simple act that can save lives,” she said.
Nationally, India has made significant strides in reducing HIV transmission under the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), implemented by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO).
Promoting Condoms as a Lifesaving Tool
Citing guidance from the World Health Organization, Lalrinpuii emphasised that condoms remain one of the safest and most effective methods to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). She urged citizens to shed stigma and misconceptions surrounding condom use.
The awareness drive also underlined that prevention failures often lead to new infections. V. Sam Prasad, Country Program Director of AHF India Cares, stated that no one should be forced into risky situations simply because they lack access to protection.
“HIV spreads when prevention fails. Ensuring easy access to condoms is a basic public health necessity,” he said.
What is Love Brigade 2.0?
To tackle stigma and improve accessibility, authorities have launched the ‘Love Brigade 2.0’ campaign. The initiative aims to normalise condom use across the state, especially among youth.
Under this programme, two-wheeler taxi riders wearing specially designed jackets stocked with free condoms will distribute them discreetly. Individuals can collect protection without hesitation or embarrassment, ensuring privacy and ease of access.
Officials believe such grassroots initiatives are crucial in breaking social taboos and encouraging safer practices.
Need for Collective Responsibility
The government’s message is clear: combating HIV requires a combined effort from communities, families, educational institutions, and healthcare providers. Awareness campaigns alone will not suffice unless supported by responsible behaviour and open conversations about sexual health.
Health experts stress that early testing, timely treatment, and preventive strategies can significantly reduce HIV transmission rates. With coordinated efforts, Mizoram aims to reverse its current trend and align more closely with the national average.
The coming months will test how effectively awareness campaigns, improved access to preventive tools, and community engagement can address what officials have described as a pressing public health crisis.
