Modi Congratulates Nepal PM Karki, Pledges Support for Peace

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki on Thursday, congratulating her on her appointment and reaffirming India’s commitment to stand by the people of Nepal during a turbulent political phase. The conversation comes in the wake of recent protests in Nepal that claimed several lives, prompting India to extend its condolences and offer support for peace and stability.

Condolences for Recent Violence

During the call, Prime Minister Modi conveyed heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of life in the protests that shook Nepal in recent weeks. He underlined India’s consistent position of supporting a peaceful resolution of internal challenges and expressed hope that the new leadership would restore calm and confidence among citizens.

“India stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Nepal in this journey,” Modi is learnt to have conveyed during the conversation. He also extended felicitations on the occasion of Nepal’s upcoming National Day.

Prime Minister Sushila Karki thanked Modi for his warm wishes and India’s unwavering support. She reciprocated the sentiment of strengthening cooperation across sectors including trade, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges. The two leaders agreed to remain in close touch to navigate challenges together and build on their historical friendship.

Context: A Critical Moment for Nepal

Karki assumed charge as the head of Nepal’s Interim Government at a sensitive juncture marked by political unrest and public demonstrations. Her government faces the task of calming tensions while steering the country toward constitutional stability and democratic continuity.

India, which shares a deep civilizational and cultural bond with Nepal, has consistently emphasized stability in the Himalayan nation as essential for regional peace and prosperity.
