From Strain to Engagement
The India-US relationship had shown signs of strain in recent months, particularly over disagreements on a trade deal and Washington’s criticism of New Delhi’s energy ties with Moscow. At the same time, speculation grew that India’s cautious engagement with China was creating unease in Washington.
However, with both leaders publicly reaffirming their friendship, officials from both sides are expected to resume efforts to finalize a trade package beneficial to both economies. A senior Indian official noted that “bilateral ties between natural allies are for global good” and that New Delhi continues to see the US as an indispensable partner.

Jaishankar Underscores Importance of Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also underscored that Prime Minister Modi attaches great importance to relations with the US. His remarks came amid renewed optimism that the friction in Washington’s policy stance would soften in the coming weeks.
President Trump, addressing a question on whether the US had “lost India to China,” dismissed the notion, recalling his recent interactions with PM Modi, including a joint appearance at the White House Rose Garden. “I get along with Modi,” Trump said, adding that the relationship remains intact despite recent turbulence.
Outlook for Trade and Security Cooperation
The focus now shifts to officials tasked with resolving trade differences. India hopes to secure fairer access to the American market while addressing Washington’s concerns about tariffs and digital policies. On the security front, the two countries are expected to continue cooperation on counterterrorism, defense technology, and Indo-Pacific stability.
Recent meetings between Indian national security planners and top US officials indicated that the trade disagreement was viewed in Washington as a “temporary hiccup” rather than a structural rift. The overall mood suggests optimism that ties will soon return to their traditional trajectory of strategic convergence.
Signals of a Reset
Observers in New Delhi believe that the public reaffirmation of friendship was necessary to calm speculation about a downward spiral in relations. India has stressed that while it engages with Russia and normalizes ties with China, its commitment to the India-US partnership remains firm.
With both leaders signaling openness to renewed engagement, the possibility of a direct phone call between Modi and Trump cannot be ruled out. Such a step could provide the political direction needed for diplomats and trade negotiators to overcome remaining hurdles.
For now, the message from both capitals is clear: the world’s largest democracies remain committed to strengthening a relationship that has global implications for trade, security, and stability.
