Mumbai witnessed heavy rain this evening, causing widespread flooding across major roads and significant traffic jams in various parts of the city. The intense downpour led to flight diversions, with airlines like SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Vistara redirecting several flights due to unfavorable weather conditions at Mumbai airport. Vistara announced that Flight UK534, traveling from Hyderabad to Mumbai, had to return to Hyderabad, with an expected landing time of 9:15 PM. Similarly, Flight UK941 from Delhi to Mumbai was diverted to Hyderabad, landing at 9:10 PM.
SpiceJet also informed passengers that Mumbai’s severe weather may affect flight schedules, urging them to monitor their flight statuses closely. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby districts, warning of weighty rainfall lasting until Thursday morning.
The impact of the rain was felt most heavily in areas like Mulund, where low-lying regions were submerged. Tragically, a woman in Andheri lost her life after falling into an open manhole. Rescue teams managed to retrieve her body after an intensive search operation.
According to the IMD, parts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri can expect more extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty winds. Scientist Sushma Nair explained that a trough from North Konkan to South Bangladesh, combined with cyclonic circulation over South Chhattisgarh, is responsible for the ongoing weather patterns, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall over the Konkan and Goa regions throughout the week.
With the situation expected to persist, the Mumbai municipal agency has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Thursday. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid non-essential travel.
