Mumbai schools and colleges will remain closed on Thursday. Classes are expected to resume on Friday if weather conditions improve. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed the city under a red alert until 8:30 am on Thursday, advising extreme caution.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents to avoid going outdoors unless necessary. The torrential downpour caused waterlogging on several roads, leading to traffic disruptions and flight diversions in the city, which serves as India’s financial hub.
Several airlines, including SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Vistara, have confirmed that some of their flights were rerouted due to the adverse weather conditions. Vistara announced that Flight UK534, from Hyderabad to Mumbai, had to return to Hyderabad, with an estimated landing time of 9:15 pm. Similarly, Flight UK941, traveling from Delhi to Mumbai, was diverted to Hyderabad, with an expected arrival time of 9:10 pm.
According to IMD scientist Sushma Nair, a weather trough stretching from North Konkan to South Bangladesh, combined with a cyclonic circulation over South Chhattisgarh, has triggered widespread light to moderate rainfall in the region. This weather pattern is expected to affect Konkan and Goa throughout the week.
