NAMASTE Scheme Empowers Sanitation Workers Nationwide

The Government of India’s National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) scheme is steadily changing the lives of sanitation workers across the country. On 23 August 2025, a special program was held at Shri Krishna Memorial Hall, Patna, where Union Social Justice & Empowerment Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar highlighted the scheme’s progress.

Key Achievements So Far

Sharing the latest figures, the minister informed that:

• 85,819 sewer and septic tank workers have been profiled.
• 76,736 workers have received PPE kits.
• 60,586 workers have been provided Ayushman Bharat Health Cards for free healthcare access.

These steps aim to ensure dignity, safety, and socio-economic empowerment for a section of workers that has long faced neglect and hazardous working conditions.

Patna Program Highlights

In Patna, profiling has been completed for 408 sanitation workers. During the event, 25 workers and 25 waste pickers were symbolically handed PPE kits, while another 25 workers received Ayushman Cards. Safety equipment was also distributed to support Emergency Response Sanitation Units (ERSU).

An innovative ‘Rang Paridhan’ fashion show was also organized to spread awareness about the importance of PPE kits. The unique initiative drew applause from attendees and highlighted how safety can be integrated into workers’ daily practices with dignity.

Commitment to Marginalized Communities

The event reaffirmed the government’s principle of “Priority to the Deprived.” By focusing on historically underserved communities, the NAMASTE scheme reflects the broader vision of Viksit Bharat—a developed India where every citizen has equal opportunity.

The participation of both central and state representatives demonstrated joint commitment to sanitation workers’ welfare.

The NAMASTE scheme continues to focus on three pillars—safety, health, and dignity. By equipping workers with protective gear, providing them with health coverage, and recognizing their contribution, the government aims to break the cycle of exploitation and neglect.
