Namma Metro Yellow Line Launches August 11

RR Team, August 5, 2025August 5, 2025

PM Modi to Inaugurate Yellow Line on August 10

After years of anticipation, Bengaluru is all set to welcome the Namma Metro Yellow Line. This key addition to the city’s public transport network will officially open for passengers on August 11. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the corridor a day earlier, on August 10.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) confirmed the launch date, stating that the line is a major part of Phase 2 of the metro expansion plan.

Metro Network Reaches 96.1 Kilometers

With the opening of the Yellow Line, Bengaluru’s total metro network will stretch to 96.1 km. Of this, 53.8 km falls under Phase 2. This positions Namma Metro as India’s second-longest metro system, serving over 8 lakh commuters daily.

India currently ranks third globally in metro coverage. Experts believe the country will soon overtake the second position due to rapid infrastructure expansion.

Route, Timings, and Frequency

The Yellow Line trains will run between 5 AM and 11 PM, consistent with the existing Namma Metro schedule. However, there’s a catch—due to a limited number of trains, service frequency will initially be every 25 minutes.

Only three driverless trainsets will be in operation during the first phase. Despite this, all 16 stations on the route will open from Day One, ensuring full route access for passengers.

Estimated Travel Time and Ridership

A complete journey on the Yellow Line will take approximately 38 minutes one way. The line is expected to serve an initial daily ridership of 25,000 commuters.

According to BMRCL, projected earnings in the early phase will be around ₹10–15 lakh per day. Once the line is fully operational, the daily revenue could exceed ₹60 lakh.

Massive Construction Effort Since 2017

The construction of the Yellow Line began in 2017. It was divided into three major packages, with a combined cost of nearly ₹5,057 crore. The corridor runs across key residential, educational, and IT hubs of the city, making it a high-demand route.

Impact on City’s Traffic and Commuting

The Yellow Line is expected to ease traffic congestion on Bengaluru’s notorious Outer Ring Road and reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters. The project is being seen as a game-changer for the city’s growing urban population.

In light of Bengaluru’s rising vehicle numbers and pollution concerns, metro expansion is also a green solution for sustainable transport.

Citizens React with Hope and Relief

Commuters across the city have expressed joy and relief on social media. For many, the Yellow Line will significantly cut down the stress and time of their daily travel. Office-goers in tech parks and students in educational clusters are especially excited.

Despite the initial 25-minute frequency, most citizens believe the new line is a step in the right direction.

Challenges Ahead for BMRCL

While the launch marks a milestone, BMRCL still faces the challenge of acquiring more trainsets and improving frequency. Sources say an order for additional rakes is in the pipeline and delivery is expected by mid-2026.

Also, last-mile connectivity and parking infrastructure at some stations are still under development, which could affect early adoption in certain zones.

What Comes Next?

The Yellow Line is just one part of a larger metro master plan. BMRCL is working on completing other Phase 2 corridors while preparing blueprints for Phase 3, aimed at bringing metro access to the city’s outer suburbs.

Public-private partnerships and increased central funding are expected to play a crucial role in these expansions.

Conclusion

The launch of the Namma Metro Yellow Line is a landmark moment for Bengaluru. It strengthens India’s position as a global metro leader and brings immediate benefits to commuters and the environment.

Though challenges remain, this metro corridor promises smoother, faster, and more reliable urban travel. For a city choked by traffic and delays, this line offers a new track forward.
