Namo Bharat, Meerut Metro to Run on Shared Tracks

RR Team, September 10, 2025September 10, 2025
The much-anticipated Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro services are set to transform urban mobility in Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the dual project soon, marking a milestone in India’s public transport history. For the first time, a semi-high-speed train and a local metro system will run on the same tracks, offering seamless connectivity for millions of commuters.

Dual Service on Shared Tracks

The project is unique as it allows the Namo Bharat semi-high-speed train and the Meerut Metro to operate on the same corridor. This integration is designed to reduce congestion and provide a more efficient travel experience across the region. While Namo Bharat will serve long-distance passengers, the metro will cater to local commuters, ensuring connectivity between urban and suburban areas.

Frequency and Speed Enhancements

Commuters can expect more frequent services, with Namo Bharat trains running every 10 minutes instead of the current 15-minute gap. The semi-high-speed trains will operate at a top speed of 160 km/h, while the Meerut Metro is expected to become India’s fastest metro system with speeds of up to 120 km/h. These advancements promise faster travel times and reduced waiting periods.

Centralised Control and Safety

Both services will be monitored from a centralised Operation Control Center (OCC) to ensure safety, punctuality, and smooth coordination between the two systems. Officials confirm that final testing of speed, signaling, and performance is currently underway. The integration of advanced signaling technology will enable safe sharing of tracks between the two services.

Boost to Regional Connectivity

The project is part of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) initiative, designed to enhance connectivity between Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. Once operational, it will reduce travel time significantly and support economic growth in the National Capital Region (NCR). Local businesses, students, and daily commuters are expected to benefit immensely from the enhanced mobility.

Commuter Relief and Urban Growth

The launch of the dual service is expected to provide a major relief to commuters who often face overcrowding and long travel hours. With world-class infrastructure and modern coaches, the project reflects India’s growing commitment to smart urban mobility. Experts believe the integration will also ease traffic congestion on roads and reduce pollution levels in the region.

What’s Next?

According to officials, the inauguration ceremony could take place in the coming weeks, following successful completion of safety trials. The initiative aligns with India’s push towards advanced urban infrastructure and is expected to serve as a model for other cities across the country.
