National Girl Child Day: Annapurna Devi Calls for Empowerment

RR Team, January 24, 2026January 24, 2026

Marking National Girl Child Day, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smt. Annapurna Devi on Saturday extended heartfelt wishes to the nation’s daughters and reiterated the government’s firm commitment to ensuring a brighter, safer and more empowered future for every girl in India.

Through a series of messages shared on social media platform X, the Minister underscored the vital role girls play in shaping society and called upon citizens to collectively uphold the principles of education, safety and equality as foundational pillars of a strong nation.

“Balika Devo Bhavaḥ”: A Call to Value Girls

Invoking the phrase “Balika Devo Bhavaḥ,” Smt. Annapurna Devi described girls as the strength and foundation of societal progress. She emphasised that safeguarding their rights and nurturing their potential is not merely a social responsibility but a national imperative.

The Minister stated that a nation’s true progress can be measured by how it treats its daughters, adding that equal opportunities for girls are essential for sustainable and inclusive development.

Government’s Commitment Under PM Modi’s Leadership

Highlighting the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Union Minister said the Ministry of Women and Child Development remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the all-round development, protection and empowerment of girls.

She noted that various initiatives of the central government are aimed at improving access to education, strengthening safety mechanisms and promoting gender equality, thereby enabling girls to pursue their aspirations with confidence.

Education, Safety and Equal Rights at the Core

On the occasion, Smt. Annapurna Devi urged citizens to renew their collective resolve towards the education, safety and empowerment of all daughters. She stressed that meaningful change requires sustained efforts not only from governments but also from families, communities and institutions.

Ensuring a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for girls, she said, is essential for unlocking their full potential and for building a more just and prosperous society.

National Girl Child Day: Significance

Observed annually on January 24, National Girl Child Day aims to raise awareness about the rights of the girl child and to address challenges such as gender discrimination, unequal access to education and safety concerns.

The day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create conditions where girls can grow, learn and lead without barriers. It also reinforces India’s constitutional commitment to equality and dignity for all citizens.

Looking Ahead

As India continues its journey towards inclusive growth, the empowerment of girls remains central to the nation’s social and economic progress. Voices from leadership, such as that of the Union Minister, play a crucial role in shaping public discourse and reinforcing national priorities.

With renewed pledges on National Girl Child Day, the focus remains on translating intent into action, ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to realise her dreams and contribute meaningfully to the country’s future.
