Objectives of the National Mission on Natural Farming
According to the operational guidelines of NMNF, the primary objective of the mission is to promote nature-based and sustainable farming systems. The focus is on increasing the use of on-farm, natural bio-inputs prepared by farmers themselves, thereby reducing dependency on externally purchased chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
By encouraging such practices, the mission aims to bring down input costs for farmers while simultaneously improving soil fertility, biodiversity and long-term agricultural sustainability. Healthier soils are expected to enhance crop resilience and productivity over time.
Integrating Livestock with Farming Systems
A key pillar of the mission is the promotion of integrated agriculture and animal husbandry models. The NMNF places particular emphasis on the use of livestock, preferably local breeds of cows, as an integral part of natural farming systems.
Cow-based inputs such as natural formulations prepared from dung and urine are central to many natural farming practices. The integration of livestock not only supports nutrient recycling on farms but also provides farmers with additional income streams and greater resilience against market fluctuations.
Strengthening Research and Knowledge Extension
The mission also seeks to strengthen agroecological research and knowledge-based extension systems across the country. Institutions such as the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and State Agricultural Universities will play a crucial role in generating scientific evidence and providing technical support.
By combining on-field experience of practicing natural farming farmers with scientific expertise, the mission aims to develop and refine location-specific packages of practices. These regionally adapted models are expected to facilitate wider adoption of natural farming across diverse agro-climatic zones.
Certification, Branding and Market Linkages
Another important objective of NMNF is to establish scientifically supported standards and farmer-friendly certification procedures for naturally grown, chemical-free produce. Simplified certification is expected to help farmers access premium markets without facing excessive compliance burdens.
The mission also envisages the creation and promotion of a single national brand for natural farming produce. A unified branding strategy is expected to enhance consumer trust, improve market visibility and ensure better price realisation for farmers adopting natural farming practices.
Government’s Vision for Sustainable Agriculture
Information about the mission and its objectives was shared by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Ramnath Thakur, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. The government has repeatedly emphasised that sustainable farming models are essential to address challenges such as rising input costs, soil degradation and climate variability.
The National Mission on Natural Farming aligns with India’s long-term vision of promoting environmentally responsible agriculture while safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods. By reducing dependence on costly external inputs and strengthening local resource use, the mission aims to make farming more viable and resilient.
