Dual Income Opportunities for Farmers
Red Sanders farmers benefit economically in two ways: by selling cultivated Red Sanders logs legally and through ABS monetary benefits mandated under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. This approach rewards conservation efforts while promoting sustainable use of a globally valued endemic species.
ABS Support Strengthening Conservation and Livelihoods
To date, NBA has released over ₹104 crore (USD 11.5 million) to Andhra Pradesh for Red Sanders conservation and beneficiaries, and over ₹15 crore (USD 1.66 million) to other states including Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Telangana. In the past three months, ₹5.35 crore has been disbursed to more than 220 farmers across Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana.
The ABS framework discourages illegal trade, ensures sustainable use, and links conservation outcomes to tangible financial returns. By transforming Red Sanders into a livelihood-supporting asset, farmers are incentivised to conserve this precious species while benefiting economically.
