Microbial Resources Driving Innovation
Microorganisms, especially bacteria, are increasingly critical in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, and biotechnology. Around 15 percent of ABS applications currently involve microbial resources, emphasizing their commercial and scientific significance. The ABS framework channels benefits to farmers, local communities, and BMCs while incentivising conservation and sustainable use of biological resources.
Through such collaborations, local stakeholders gain recognition and financial benefits, transforming previously ‘invisible’ contributions into tangible support. The NBA has already released around Rs 8 crore to over 200 BMCs and seven institutions across Maharashtra alone, strengthening the state’s biodiversity governance ecosystem.
ABS Framework Achievements and National Impact
With this latest release, India’s cumulative ABS disbursements have surpassed Rs 144.20 crore (approximately USD 16 million), showcasing the country’s leadership in implementing a robust, inclusive biodiversity governance framework. The ABS model promotes equitable benefit-sharing while encouraging innovation, sustainable economic growth, and ecological responsibility.
NBA’s efforts demonstrate the practical application of national biodiversity legislation in aligning corporate research and commercial utilisation with community welfare. By ensuring fair compensation to local custodians of biological resources, the ABS framework serves as a replicable model for biodiversity-rich nations globally.
