NBA Releases ₹18.3L to Biodiversity Committees in UP, Sikkim

RR Team, October 26, 2025October 25, 2025
The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has released ₹18.3 lakh to support Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) in Uttar Pradesh and Sikkim under the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) framework of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. The funds aim to empower local communities in the sustainable management and conservation of biodiversity resources.

Funds Disbursed to Local Committees

The amount was transferred through the respective State Biodiversity Boards to two BMCs: Narrau village Biodiversity Management Committee in Akrabad Kaul Taluk, Aligarh District, Uttar Pradesh, and the Biodiversity Management Committee in the Lampokhari Lake area, Aritar, Sikkim. These committees will use the funds to strengthen biodiversity conservation initiatives and ensure sustainable utilization of local resources.

Purpose of the Funding

In Narrau village, a company accessed crop materials for producing fermentable compounds from lignocellulosic biomass. Meanwhile, in Sikkim, a company accessed microorganisms from water and soil samples of Lampokhari Lake for research purposes. As per the Biological Diversity Act, the ABS mechanism ensures that benefits arising from the use of local biological resources are shared with the community custodians who preserve them.

Empowering Local Custodians

By channeling these funds, NBA reinforces the role of BMCs as key stakeholders in biodiversity conservation. The support helps these local custodians implement conservation strategies, develop sustainable livelihood options, and engage in environmental stewardship. This initiative is part of a broader effort to integrate local knowledge into national biodiversity management policies and promote participatory governance.

About the National Biodiversity Authority

Established under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, the NBA oversees the conservation, sustainable use, and equitable sharing of benefits derived from India’s rich biological resources. By linking access and benefit-sharing frameworks with local committees, the NBA ensures that biodiversity protection contributes to both environmental sustainability and community welfare.
